Thumbs up Spider Camera Holster

Looks like an interesting product.

I'll stick with the neck strap, but I could see this being useful.

Engadget has a good spread on it:

Pretty cool but I'd feel some cameras might be too heavy and walking by people would be quite a pain.

Similar in concept to the Cotton Carrier holster, but the Cotton Carrier holster is a bit simpler and doesn't swing as freely, which are pluses.

And I'm talking only about the holster. The vest part is a bit much unless you really need it.

IMHO these seem more geared toward having a place to put your camera between shots rather than a place to keep your camera all day long.

while the vest is a little much; I like the idea. I travel a lot with my camera (just came back from peru) and a neck strap is nice, but when you are moving around having it more secure on your body and not moving around seems appealing.

I always just carry the strap on my shoulder so the camera hangs at my side, so when I go to take a picture I just bring it to my eye and use my arm to put some tension on the strap so it'll stay steady.

Items like this are for people who are carrying extra bodies while doing a shoot. They could have a camera on a monopod and the one or two wrapped around their necks.

I need to get some sort of chest attachment, so when I'm hiking and I bend over, the camera doesn't swing forwards and whack something

Anyone like the blackrapid strap?
I saw this guy using it but at a closer look i'm not a fan at the construction.

I'm not one of those guys that wear the oversized pants/sagging... and I don't wear tight ass jeans either, but I think this would just pull my pants down or at least make it uncomfortable

one thing about these, can you use it with a non-1D body with the grip attached, i dont know how strong the grip is and if it could take that kind of strain

i have heard of a 40D with grip and a heavy lens on a tripod and the grip flexes enough to cut off the power to the camera.

Billiam has one. I am interested in it, but am a little worried that the camera will swing around when walking.

The Black Rapid strap is definitely not going to completely stop the camera from swinging. It will, however, vastly minimize the swinging compared to anything that hangs your rig in front of your chest. To stop any small swinging there may be, you just put your hand at your side at its natural location and that's where your camera is. If you're looking for a solution for hikes though, you can very likely do better. As Jup sort of mentioned, the main intent of the BR straps are quick access such as when you're working with two bodies. Lastly, I don't have any concerns over the construction.

I am going to go into a store and give it a try.

Funny story though is that the biggest reason I have problems with my camera strap is that often I have my 2yr old daughter with me. Twice I have whacked her in the head with my camera when bending over give her the attention that she so often demands. What I like about the R-Strap is that I think I would be able to carry her on one arm and shoot with the other if the need arose. It definitely won't fix the whack in the head problem though.

You'd probably want a separate (non-leather) belt for the holsters. You could also put a lens or accessory bag(s) on the other side to balance the weight.
