Question Selling images??

I'm curious, do any of you guys sell your pictures on the internet?

What are some reputable services out there that allow photographers to simply upload pictures they take and put them up for sale for people to buy?

iStockphoto is probably one of the most popular of these sorts of services. At least as far as name recognition is concerned.

I've sold some of my work, albeit, not the past few years. I didn't advertise, although I did look into putting my work in a city restaurant, where it would be used to decorate the space, and also be listed for sale. I opted against it at the time. The only people who have bought my prints are people who know me, and people who knew those people -- I've never really advertised to the public. My current employer approached me and is looking to set up packages of my work that I can sell to a larger market through my job though, as a small side business/extra money (for me). We'll see what ends up happening with that. I've also had requests to do paid portrait work for lots of different people, but up until now have never done it, minus a friends casual BBQ wedding many years ago and family gatherings. Dan and I have many contacts to the art world, so we may look into a few local galleries to see if they will do a small showing of our work...We've yet to approach them, but at least we have some great leads on who to speak with. No guarantees though.

I want to be around creative types more so than I am now (which is practically zero). At each of the photo workshops I've done as well as the Photoshop seminar I attended I kept thinking "These are more my kind of people."

Funny, I was just reading an article last night from Outdoor Photographer on how to market yourself for selling stock photos. I think the article is in the December issue.

I'd have a hard time selling my prints as stock photos. My photos are so personal to me....weird, I know, but I'm kind of protective of them. I know that type of attitude doesn't help when trying to market or sell my work (which I'm not doing right now), but I think by ellimating the whole stock photo market, I'd feel more comfortable letting go of some of my stuff. At least I'd feel better knowing my work would be for personal enjoyment and interest rather than sitting on thousands of companies' hard drives without them being appreciated or respected much (as art).

We have contact more "to" the art world than "in" the art world. We are very close to someone who knows tons, and tons of artists (using different medium - not just photography), collectors, and gallery owners. I suppose we could get to know them all personally, but we (or I) just haven't really made an effort to yet.

A friend of mine uses imagekind. Not sure how many he's sold through them, though.

I know just what you mean. Very few of my close circle of friends are "artsy" at all.

I recently met someone who is into photography in a similar capacity that I am. Not a profession, but a passionate hobby. We're going to go see the Annie Leibowitz/Ansel Adams exhibit at the Corcoran on Sunday. (I've been dying to see it!) It's nice also, because we plan on going shooting together. We shoot very different subject matter, typically. He's much more into the urban thing. I think it will be good for both of us to branch out a little. It actually inspired me to finally order a tripod mount for my 40D. (Can't believe I hadn't already.)

Sorry sly - I'm off on a tangent as usual...
