Okay so someone asked about the SD400 and im actually shopping for a true ultracompact camera. Forgetting price, I am trying to find the best one on the market. The competition:

Canon powershot SD500 7.1 megapixel
Nikon Coolpix S2 5.1 megapixel
Fujifilm Z1 and F450 5.1 megapixel
Casio Exilim ex-z750 7.2 and ex-s500 5.2 megapixel
Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-T7 Digital Camera 5.1 megapixel
Pentax Optio S5Z

I'm going to spend all night looking and reviewing all of these pro's and con's

 

the small point-and-shoot TO HAVE right now is..... the Canon SD500.

 

Yea but I hear the Casio z750 is right up there with it!

 

I just got the DSC-T7 as a replacement from a service plan from best buy, my old camera broke. I love the size and the great lcd screen it has. Even though it doesn't have a viewfinder Sony did a pretty good job with the lcd screen that can be used outside in the bright light. 3x optical zoom for a camera that thin is pretty good. However, even though it's 5.1 MP I heard the picture quality is not the best. I read alot of Cnet reviews. I wanted the SD400 but I wanted an ultraportable digital camera and the T7 did it for me. Also I not a photographer and really don't care about printing big pictures. I am more of a video guy.

I have the Casio EX750 and it kicks ass. I love the speed of the camera, wide array of manual adjustments and the "best shot" feature kicks ass. I was deciding between the SD500 and the EX750, ended up with the 750 because Costco had a good deal on it. I don't think that you could go wrong with either one.

 

haven't seen the ez-e750..... would like to.

 

I still prefer the SD400 over the SD500. SD500 is not as "pocket friendly" with the clamshell design on one end.

BUT...if this were to be your only digicam for those who do not also own a DSLR, then it IS the one to have.

This place also generally has very thorough reviews. It's a British site though so sometimes they use European model numbers if the manufacturers have different ones from the North American market.

I think Sony's small point-and-shoots are TERRIBLE!!!! pic quality is SO BAD.

 

gawdamn.... call me crazy but... these pics along with some my friend took confirm something I have been thinking.... the SD500 rivals entry-level DSLR's.... I mean, you could tell me those pics were taken with a DSLR, and I'd believe you...

I have an SD300 and love it. I'd imagine the 400 and 500 would be that much better.

as many have said, it's HUGE...

 

I checked out SD500 in the store yesterday...I found it pretty compact and sleek (though not as compact as Sony Cyber-shot® DSC-T7). I would prefer canon over sony.

 

this is why the sd400 is teh win.

compact as hell and you dont really need more then 5mp

 

compactness aside, what do you guys think of Canon PowerShot S70? Does it have better lens than sd500?

 

It will have better optics because the glass is slighty larger.

My mom has the S50 and I have a friend here with the S70. I think they are really awesome cameras. And they love them as well. I dont think you can go wrong with that camera.

 

Canon just announced 2 new models... SD450 and SD550...

the key differences are a larger 2.5" LCD screen, along with a new DIGIC II image processor. SO if you've been holding out on getting any of these cams, I suggest getting one of these new SD's!!

Canon also announced the S80, which has got to be awesome as well... it appears they've slimmed it down - a welcome change - along with making its controls and design more current and appealing.

 

Nice thread! Actually, I'm in the market for a slim digicam...So, from what I'm reading here, everyone is recommending the Canon over the Sony DSC-T7...?

Noobish question...but, is 3X zoom (the zoom capability of pretty much all compact digicams) sufficient for a casual user?

wow 2.5 inch....trying to compete with sony big ass lcds. Ive been loving my SD400 i got with the office depot thread last month. Been using the hell out of it on set.

 

Well, actually, why is the Canon better than the Sony's superslim? I thought the Carl Zeiss lens was good?

The Car Zeiss mark is a marketing scheme... Canon has the most superior optics for cameras today and in the past.

 

Now, I'm strictly a canon p&s user....but careful how you phrase this because it is not true in an overall aspect when referring to camera optics.
