Couple filters, crappy tripod.

Oh and my favorite accessory:
SanDisk Extreme IV Firewire Reader. Nothing like clearing an 8GB CF card in just a minute or two.

Bit the bullet and ordered the Canon 17-55, as well as a 430EX (w/ some Eneloop batteries).

I'm really hoping I like the lens, I'm a bit concerned by the limited zoom range but am hoping the indoor low-light portrait abilities make up for it.

Definitely give your impressions of the lens in the leans discussion thread. It's on my wishlist, but it's going to be tough to justify at the moment.

I think you will like the 430EX a lot better than the built-in flash.

The 17-55 is a great lens and you'll get used to the seemingly limited zoom range. It's a good general focal range. If you need to go longer just take a couple of steps forward. :D

If image quality is your thing than the 17-55 is an excellent option in zoom lenses. It's tack sharp with great color and contrast. I'm predicting you'll love it.

i tried out that lens w/ a 40D at a friend's bday party a couple weeks ago.... it was doing a LOT of hunting... I kinda didn't like it. I then slapped a 85mm 1.8 on it and that lens was spectacular. :2cents: hope the 17-55 was a dud.

soopa 12-05-2007 04:36 PM

So far so good with the lens.

srika 12-05-2007 04:42 PM

cool - I seriously felt like there was something wrong with that lens..

waTSX 12-05-2007 07:34 PM

There must've been. I've seen no reports of focusing problems with the 17-55 and mine has been spot-on with the AF. Very quick, sure and quiet.

srika 12-05-2007 08:01 PM

dunno why I mentioned it.. :sorry:

Looks like a nice bag, good price. But you'll get hosed about it. Maybe you'll be able to remove the name plate.

stogie1020 12-09-2007 11:33 PM

just use a sharpie and put "<Canon" after the Nikon word.....

stogie1020 12-09-2007 11:40 PM

Dunno what happened, I meant to type < Canon after the word Nikon...

This bag looks like a similar item I purchased. When I got the bag, it could barely fit my gear, even without the laptop. So I ended up returning it.

I got the bag based on the pic above. But in reality, there is no way all that equipment will fit in the bag.

Have you had a chance to use these yet? I've got a $75 gift card and I'm looking for misc stuff to pick up.

Yes, love love love them. The white is handy all around and the gold produces some really nice scenes. Havent yet found a use for the green... but supposedly it's only useful accompanied by a lens filter... that i dont have.

Where might one find deals like that?

The gold and green are used to balance the color temperature of the flash to the lighting conditions. Tungsten light is warm and gold, so you use the gold omnibounce in those conditions. Fluorescents are a bitch, so avoid them whenever possible. They flicker on and off and cycle through hundreds of colors every second. Overall, the green omnibounce will give you a better match in fluorescents though.

The idea is to match the flash temp to the lighting temp, and choose an appropriate white balance. This makes the flash appear as an ambient light source in your final picture and is much less obvious than a bright white flash in a warmly-lit room.

Yes. I understand that.

For the green one, this is what BH has to say:

"can be used to correct for fluorescent lighting in conjunction with an FLD or 30M filter on the camera lens"

That's assuming you're shooting film. With digital, it's just a matter of selecting the fluorescent white balance, either before you shoot in JPG, or at the time of conversion for RAW. No filter needed...

soopa 12-14-2007 10:05 AM

ahhhhh. got it. thanks

My Bro-in-law works for a distributor who sells to small stores. When the 40D was launched the salesmen were told to get rid of all the 30Ds (@$300). So the salesmen all bought them and started ebaying them for $800+ (greedy bastards). Anyway one salesman had one left and needed to sell quick to make room in his basement

Need inside connections.

EuRTSX 12-14-2007 10:32 AM

Thought I'd just put a "Ghost" post and just post my Nikon stuff again.
Because I know all you Canon fans will just look at it and say, oh it's just a Nikon and keep going your ways :D

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2617/cimg3103zb6.jpg

Nothing's really changed much,

Tamrac Bag (Getting a bit small actually, should've invested in a bigger bag)
Tokina 12-24mm Super Wide Angle Lens
Flash Diffuser
Nikon 18-70mm Kit Lens
Nikon D70s
Nikon Speedlight SB-600

The D70s is actually becoming quite outdated and I'm getting less interested in shooting with it. I'm seriously soon considering upgrading to a D200 or possibly even a D300.

Also, I have a new Fisheye Lens coming, and a fisheye toy (impulse buy), and maybe interested in investing in a 70-200mm lens.
