the starter kit, if its anything like mine, i just a bag, a 58mm uv filter and a NB-2LH battery (for a XTi)
|
^^ But my point was the BG-E2N is for the 40D, whereas the BG-E3 is for the 400D (XTi)
|
Correct, the BG-E2 and BG-E2N fit the 20/30/40D.
The poster must've added an extra 0. :) |
i was saying the starter kit is just a bag, he could jsut be saying that he has bag from the 400D starter kit

Regardless, nice glass. Welcome. Now post pics. |
So B-CH 6 , you're in Berlin and you found this board. Would you mind..how?

After many months of research, I bit the bullet and got one of these at lunch today:
http://www.logix-usa.com/images/Epson4880.jpg Link The only problem is it wouldn't fit in the car! I'm borrowing a van tomorrow and picking it up in the morning. It's not on a skid, but it's just about the size of one. The shipping weight is around 100 pounds, so I might need to enlist our dog to do some pulling. I also got a roll of Epson Premium Luster and some 17x22 sheets of Ilford Gold Fiber Silk to play with. Now that 50D better get here ASAP! :boogie: |

Nice Dan!
I gotta get rid of my dot matrix printer... |
I couldn't wait for tomorrow, so I picked it up tonight. I wasn't kidding when I said this thing was big... I folded the 3rd row down in the Oddy and this is with the box pressed against the back of the middle seats:
https://farm4.static.flickr.com/3169...5b0d58d8_o.jpg Hmmm it looks smaller in the pic than it does in real life, but then again, that is a minivan. :) I haven't taken anything out of the box yet aside from the very nice instruction package. Everything comes in a nice leather portfolio with the driver CD affixed to the inside cover. They even include a little plastic hook that you can adhere to the printer or print stand so you can hang up the quick reference guide for later use. I'll definitely need it too because there is a ton of stuff to learn before I can even get started. I'm going to read as much as I can tonight and tomorrow, then I hope to set up the printer on Sunday. I will also be running a new network drop (hence the cable) to my basement where I will be setting up a little print studio. So I have a few things to work out first, but I can't wait to get some prints off this bad boy!

I know there will be a 4900 coming soon, but the 7900 and 9900 are going to be $1000 more than the units they replace, so the 4900 could also be a lot more money. The thing that gave me the final push to buy today was it is now on sale at Vistek for $400 off and I got a free roll of paper too ($100 value). I basically got everything with the two packs of paper and taxes in for less than the regular retail price last week.

Congrats! I guess I was so resigned to us just having them printed at the pro lab for now (until we invested in a printer) that I didn't really consider that we'd be able to do them all at home so soon! I'm probably more surprised at the timing than anything, but was very :toocool: at the idea of it all. I'm really looking forward to seeing our stuff in high-quality print (and not with this pink-tone, crappy monitor I stare at). :woot: Photos!!! |
i dont really know much about printers, care to tell me what is so good about it?
|
Thats awesome. There are times where I would love a huge pro epson to make prints on, but I do not print enough to even remotely try and justify or desire spending the money. I personally would rather just have a relationship with a good lab.
You know this already, but it isnt just hey, here is my printer lets get going...welcome to wider world of creating color profiles and calibrations and spending days/weeks figuring that all out to have the printer spit out what it is you see as correct from your monitor. I am jealous...and yet not because of the time commitment :D I do think you will get a lot of excitement out of having that handy. If I were to ever get to a point where I was going to have a show at a gallery or some such. This would be a great purchase to make series, etc. |
^ We've both had opportunities to do some photography for profit over the years, so should we accept new opportunities now or in the future, this will just help us complete the work cycle. We also have some ideas on how to make photography a much bigger part of our lives, so again, this printer can play a big part in helping us reach our goals. We're looking at the printer as a long-term investment, and a great addition to our gear.

To begin, it's a 17" wide printer so it can handle sheets from 8"x10" up to 17"x22" or it can take rolls of paper up to 17" wide. It's one of Epson's Professional Imaging line of printers, so it's really designed for high-end photo labs and offset printing houses who use it for proofing. Because it's designed for high-volume facilities, it has huge ink carts (110ml or 220ml) so it's actually pretty economical to print. Speaking of ink, it uses their Ultrachrome K3 Vivid Magenta inkset which is a pigment-based ink that is suitable for archival printing. There are 9 inks in the set that cover a very large gamut, and there's a Advanced Black & White mode that produces stunning grayscale (or split toned) prints. There are tons of other cool features, but those would be the highlights.

The other downside is we live about an hour north of Toronto, so it's not quite as convenient as when I lived closer to the city. There are no good labs up where we live. You know this already, but it isnt just hey, here is my printer lets get going...welcome to wider world of creating color profiles and calibrations and spending days/weeks figuring that all out to have the printer spit out what it is you see as correct from your monitor. I am jealous...and yet not because of the time commitment :D One nice thing about the pro Epsons is they're really the industry standard, so almost all of the high-end paper manufacturer's provide canned profiles for Epsons first, then worry about HP and Canon later (or maybe never). One of my favorite papers is Ilford's Gold Fiber Silk and they have very good profiles for free on their site. I do think you will get a lot of excitement out of having that handy. If I were to ever get to a point where I was going to have a show at a gallery or some such. This would be a great purchase to make series, etc. As SS mentioned in her post above, we have a few opportunities that would justify having it here. I'm sure I'll post more about that later... |

I have a good lens range now, and for the foreseable future, maybe only a longer prime (EF 300 or 400) or the EF 100-400 are on the radar. |
WaTSX, I love your collection. Pretty much exactly what I want.
