Planning on buying a Canon Rebel XT (My first SLR)

First of all i'm new to cameras, but very into photography. Looking to buy my first SLR, and mainly decided on the rebel XT. What are some good prices that you all bought this camera for? What are some things I should know before buying, and any heads up tips will be welcomed. Need this camera for everyday use, car shots, and nature shots.

i got an XT for my first SLR as well back in october. I bought it used for $450, but i think you can find it new for almost that same price now.

I've been very happy with it, although i do find myself lusting after the XTi on occasion. I really like how light the rebel series is. Also i guess i have small hands, cause anything bigger feels kinda bulky to me now. In fact, after playing w/ a 30D and a D80 for a while, I really like my camera even more. I know it feels cheap compared to those, but that's because it IS cheap.

I wish i had gotton a black body, but i was rushing to find a used XT a week before leaving for japan, so i wasn't being picky. and if you're short on cash, get used to wanting the 400d or really nice lenses and not being able to afford them . I think a kit lens, and maybe a 50mm 1.8 mkII, are good enough to start with though.

The XT is a great camera, it will serve you well for years to come. Start with the kit lens and get comfortable with the camera. Once you have an idea of what you like to shoot, you can make additions or changes to your lens lineup.
Get a nice bag, 2GB of memory, a decent tripod and you should be good to go.

Hey, thanks for the heads up.

Leo Type S,

I'll let it go for $350 shipped if you want it.

I really would like a black one, but that is a very good deal. I was looking into getting one within the next 2 months. I'm doing some more research, so yea. Post pics in your F/S thread please.

No problem, I'll post pic's. For what you could save getting mine you get you a REALLY NICE lens.

Pic's will be up shortly, I've already purchased a new body 30D. So I'm not rushed to sell this, but would like to sale to get another lens. If I don't sell I might donate for a tax write off or trade it in for the lens I want. But rather sell to sell one outright for the better deal for both parties.

Hmm I found a XTi with 2GB for $800 and a XT with 2GB for $650. (new)

XTi with Kit = 723.00
XT with Kit = 572.00

I Have a film SLR and a Digital P&S. For a beginner I think the XT is enough, but I can't decide. I'm leaning towards the XT......any reccomendations?

Right after I bought my Rebel XT on Circuit City for about $5xx, I saw it on Amazon.com for $499. IIRC, it's just the camera body, no lens. I bought the 28-105 lens separately from Best Buy for $320. I just got the camera on Tuesday, lens on Wednesday, so no time to play yet.

Just buy the cheaper kits if the ones with 2gb cards are ~$78 more. You can get a 2gb card for cheaper than that.

Adorama.com and BHphoto.com are two of the best sources for camera gear in general, not always but usually if it's cheaper then these two--it can be too good to be true.

The Rebel XTi is worth every penny over the XT for the 2.5" LCD. It may not sound like a big deal but it is once you have used them for a bit of time.

Another great camera is the Nikon D40 for a beginner. Don't let the MP count fool you. As a novice you will likely never notice 6 vs. 8 vs. 10mp from a DSLR they are simply a cut above P&S camera's period. I've made 20x30" prints from a 6mp DSLR, and 8x12's all day long from a 3MP DSLR.

Regards,

www.dpreview.com is a great site for camera reviews...

I, too, shoot with the XT, and have been very pleased with it. My flickr site probably isn't quite as entertaining as Shiffy's examples, but if you want to see more shots from the XT...

Wow
Those are some nice shots.

I know you said you were using a 17-85 for most the pics. Those are some really clear and creative pictures! Thanks.
