Picked up my first DSLR

With our first baby arriving in a few months the wife and I thought it would be good to step up to a DSLR. I had decided on Canon mainly because everyone I work with shoots canon and the amount of lens's I can borrow is huge. I was looking for an XS mainly due to price but with the new models coming out I was able to pick up a T1i at target last night for $550. Charged the battery last night and took some test shots this morning and everything looks good.

Any suggestions for someone who has only ever used a P&S? Until I do a lot of reading I see a lot of full auto in my future

Congrats !!

You can use the DSLR as P&S with better results or get more into manual settings which will slow you down but give more control.
You might also consider ...
1. Get up to speed with Photoshop or equiv.
2. Better Canon L grade lenses.
3. Shoot in Raw or Jpeg + Raw for more exposure detail.
4. Video.
5. Do a time serries of baby to adult - saw the results of one shot per day over 18 years video. She grew up fast !

I'd suggest joining some photo sites such as flickr and dpreview as there's a wealth of knowledge, especially in the forums. Also, don't forget you'll probably be needing to learn a good photo editing/management software for all those cute photos you'll be taking in the near future!
