Especially when you attach a white lens to it.

I just ordered a Rebel XT last night! Can't wait to start playing with it!! It's my first SLR camera. It's replacing an Olympus c5000 zoom (my parents called dibs on that - they don't even have a digicam yet, lol!).

I never thought I'd see the words 'very compact' used in a sentence regarding a SLR.
It always struck me as a bit odd in comparing sizes of SLRS. I mean, after you
stick the same lens on both, is there really that much of a signifigant difference?
They're both going to be big enough that they're inconvenient.
There's an element of truth between how serious you are, and how much equipment you
carry around. After you reach a certain point, carrying more equipment around is
just annoying. There's stuff I'd like to have with me that I really just don't
care to generally lug around with me.

I myself never thought an SLR should be small and I have never shopped for an SLR based on size, for sure. It really is kind of an oxymoron.
I do have to say that the D40 is ridiculously small, it reminds me of one of the bigger C-series Olympus digicams from '02. Very nice size factor and very nice pics - I do believe there is a market for that because I know for one there are occasions where I just would never use the 5D - but if I had something as small as the D40, yes I could use it. Think about like parties with family or friends... I did take the 5D out once at a party but that was ONLY because ppl were asking me where was my cam, and also I was pretty
. Anyway...
Chod I like what you had to say about how serious you are and how much you carry around - it does make some amount of sense, doesn't it. Then you get to some point where you are looking for ways to get similar results with less equipment..

This was before every third person had a DSLR as a primary camera.SLR's in general definitely freak people out.
I hate the whole "Bigger the equipment, better the person" stigma. But it does happen. I shoot a significant amount of ENG/EFP television news gathering and it is funny how when I shoot my old circa 2002 DVCpro Panasonic crowds go crazy. I'd then shoot a handheld Sony HDV camera and I'm no longer special... Sadly, the 5k dollar sony shot just as well as the 26k dollar panasonic.

It has some underwater modes, too. I didn't see any mention of water resistance, but I wonder how much the underwater case is.
