The Non-Post-Processed Thread

All this talk about PP and editing kinda made me wanna make this thread. The only modifications allowed are resizing, sharpening, and a watermark if you like - no cropping, NR, straightening, or anything else. I'm hoping it might invigorate some experimentation to see what kind of varied results you can get straight out of your camera. I haven't taken any shots specifically with this thread in mind but I do have a few I wanna share, for now. Come to think of it, I think this would make for a good contest sometime down the road.

You realize this is like the photographic equivalent of asking us to walk down the street in a loin cloth.

Random quotes I read earlier today:
"There's a method to his madness. It's called the Zone System."

"Men ony think about sex, which is slanderous because they like photographing it too."

P.S., those are amazing photos if there is no PP. I'm envious!

How about making it more reasonable, and saying, 'minimal post processing'.

Like a straight out of the camera JPG, or an import and immediate dump of a RAW in photoshop/lightroom.
In either case there is some post processing done, but not a great deal.

It also won't automatically disqualify all pics done in the past - I don't even know how to turn
off all post processing options in lightroom.

This contest could be very educational, and possibly eye opening.

I'd love to see pictures that had descriptions of photography tools/skills needed to
shoot the picture. Like particular use of filters, or lighting, or other techniques.

yes - either JPG or RAW - I suppose you could argue the RAW conversion is a form of post-processing, but there really is not an alternative to that, is there.

It also won't automatically disqualify all pics done in the past - I don't even know how to turn off all post processing options in lightroom.
You could save the picture's processing as a preset and then reset it and export.. that's the easiest way I can think of.

I always thought you gained sharpness, or at least lose possibly unsharp details.
Here's a recent pic I was pretty happy with:

I remember seeing the sun drop down and hit her at this nice angle, and I'm suddenly flailing about for my camera and yelling, 'Don't move! don't move! don't move!'

This is about as close to unprocessed as I'll ever get. It's cropped a bit, but that's it I think.

I know what you mean - you can have an image that looks soft at full-size look sharper at small size. That's true. But you can also have an image that looks sharp at full-size, look softer at small size. But, it also depends on your resizing software. I just did some testing with Lightroom and PSP and it looks like LR's resizing is better than PSP's "Smart Size" option. However PSP's "Weighted Average" and "Bicubic" resizing modes might be better. I tend to like using PSP's resize because it gives you a slider rather than a predetermined algorithm (which I think LR uses) - but it looks like LR does a great job.

Here is some testing with PSP's "Weighted Average" mode, resizing from the original crop, without sharpening - you can see the image losing detail as it gets smaller:

here it is with the same level of sharpening applied after resizing from the original:

Yeah, I just noticed that my small image is fuzzier than my original.
It used linux's ImageMagick library. Ah well.

is that a special mode or something? can you share the EXIF with us?

if you can, try to leave the EXIF in the file - or post it along with the pic. Another nice thing about no-PP is that the EXIF actually has some bearing on the picture.

this came out wrong.. what I mean is, PSP has a regular resize option, and after I resize using that, I go into "Smart Photo Fix", reset those settings to 0 (it's "Auto" suggestions are 9 times out of 10 dreadful), and increase the "Focus" (sharpness) slider as needed. And unfortunately I overdo it a lot.. I think I'm getting better at it though. Lately, when I get it looking like how I want, I'll drop it down a bit from that point.

I guess the EXIF is gone when I chose smaller size from Flickr.
Here is the orginal size, http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2325/...98913c77_o.jpg
the original EXIF data should still be there.

ND grad FTW.
The sky on the left must have been really bright, or did you not cover it with the grad? How many stops is your filter?

Lol..
It was quite bright. 2 stops. If I used 3 stops, it would be better than that.

these are kinda old and I don't have the EXIF's on em.. but they were with my D70. No tripod on the city shot, not really sure how I took it - might have put it on a ledge.

Nice cityscape, hrj. I like the fact that it's not pitch black outside. The colorful sky gives it a nice dimension.

This is a slight variation of the water abstract posted in my Glacier set on Flickr. Default camera raw settings, resized using bicubic sharper, converted to sRGB, converted to 8 bit
