Just a funny little anecdote. We have this kid show up on the set of the TV show I work on a few times a week. He comes dressed in his expensive little hipster outfits carrying around his 60D (or which model has a flip out screen) with a few accessories. My big issue with him is he shooting a lot of behind the scenes footage but this kid is not local 600 (my camera union) and its SUPPOSED to be a union position. My Director of Photography said to leave it alone so I have.

But last Friday I was chatting with our set still photographer who shoots Nikon and we were chatting about the delayed upcoming rumored bodies.

This kid happened to be standing near and thought he was being funny by making an offhanded "because Nikon sucks" comment.

I stopped what I was doing at that point and looked at him and said, "Take offense to this if you want, but if you seriously believe that than you need to sell that camera in your hand because you have no business running around shooting and getting paid for it. There isn't one company is better than the other, its all about tools and choices. Each have their pros and cons."

He just looked at the ground and shut up. I went back on set.

These smarmy little shits that don't know the first thing about anything just annoy the fuck out of me.

Hell, I've had the same shit with a couple professional set stills guys...and it shuts them down every time. You've never seen someone look like they feel so stupid for opening their mouths in their lives.

This kind of bums me out as I just got my 60D today after years of my trusty D40X. But, I have never believed one to be better than the other & have always been taught that the photographer makes the photos, not the camera.

Right...but that little hipster shit is getting paid to shoot behinds the scenes footage...which he chooses to do on his little DSLR...he has made other comments in regards to filming on the DSLR vs other purpose built cameras...

There are a lot of people I want to bitch slap in this world...some I have to see more often than others.

Sounds like there's 2 issue's here, he's a gadget head that should just shut up.

But I guess what has you more pissed is that he isn't part of the union? Why is he allowed to be there and why were you asked to leave it alone?

The union thing bugs me...but not that much.

I don't think he is a gear head...I think he is a recent film school grad, who scrapped some cash away from his hipster clothing budget to buy a consumer level camera that shoots HD...and now thinks he knows everything and can shoot just as well as a pro.

My issue is that if you have that attitude and you're dumb enough to try and flaunt in front of me, I'm going to make you look and feel very stupid in about 3 seconds flat...And I'll do it in front of a group of people, even the ones that hired you.

I hate all the comparisons, and the constant debates and arguments... I wish people would just enjoy the hobby (or job) and do their own thing. Since I have a lot of time on my hands these days, sometimes I'll sit there browsing through hundreds of photos in Flickr (from shooters of all different brands), I've seen excellent stuff from people with the most entry models with kit lenses (of whatever brand), or even P&S's, and I've seen or mediocre photos from people with high end gear. It's like the whole Ford vs Chevy (trucks), BMW vs M.B. iPhone vs Android...
