I'm surprised more people aren't excited about the 35mm 1.4. That's always been a trump card from the Canon camp, but now that it's here nobody's talking about it.

35mm is a great length on both full frame and crop bodies. Is it the $1800 sticker price that's putting people off?

I also really like the D7000 and SB-700. That's a pretty great package of goodies for Nikonians.

It should be a great lens, the new 24 and 85 are. I think I'd like to get an 85mm. For me I'm happy with my zooms (14-24 and 24-70) and find I've not been shooting at 35mm focal length. A lot of what I've been doing is wider. I don't find that I need the 1.4 for speed, Nikon's ISO's give that to me. Would be great for boken though.

Again, I've been so impressed with Nikon's zooms, I have not wanted primes. Except an old 50mm 1.2.

The D7000 is a great offering. If it had one little feature I'd probably be buying one.

The flash, I dont use flash so I dont care.

The lens. Its nice and all, but I dont care for it. I live on my 24mm 95% of the time. I would much rather have the 24-70mm zoom. If they can get that to a 1.4 or a 2 without adding another grand to the cost, I'd be excited.
As jupe said, the Nikkor zooms are fantastic, They leave very little reason to go prime for most applications.

I am going to talk to the salesguy I spoke to about a D90 at a local camera shop about a month ago. He spent some time going over stuff with me, and I'd rather give him the commission and have a local place to deal with then going online. I am 99.999% sure I will be getting the D7000. Can't wait.

Well I haven't had a ton of time to play with the camera yet. I have a WICKED headache right now so I will probably be heading off to nap or something in a couple minutes. My first impressions on the camera so far though are:

1) Really solid feel. While the D60 feels like a nice solid camera, this just feels more substantial.

2) It seems almost impossible to take a bad picture. I played with the scene modes a little, and shot in auto a bit. I haven't yet played with any of the manual modes but plan on doing that tomorrow. To choose your scenes, you turn the dial to Scene mode, and use the scroll wheel to select your scene which is shown on the LCD screen. Very easy.

3) This camera is FAST. It focuses fast, and it shoots fast. I played with the two continuous shot modes as I do use that quite a bit on the D60. The CL mode is EXTREMELY fast. The CH mode is just unreal how fast it shoots. This camera would be a great choice for sports photography. I had to order a couple higher capacity Class 10 cards that will write at 30 mb/s as what I have now is just not fast enough.

4) The video mode is pretty nice. It's not the best video camera you can get, but definitely adequate and easy to use. It will be nice to not have to carry a second camera at parties. The card I have no only records about 5 to 10 seconds at 1080 since it cannot write fast enough. I am hoping the new cards work much better. I ordered them next day since I have Amazon Prime so I should be able to answer that tomorrow.

Overall I LOVE it so far. Hopefully tomorrow and over the weekend I will have a lot more time to play and see what it can really do.

Ok, got my faster cards. Video now shoots with no problems. I definitely would have to say the Class 10 cards are a must with this camera. The burst mode does not have an issue writing fast now either.

I now have it set to write to the first card in RAW and the second card in JPEG Fine. You can also set it to Overflow so it writes to card one until it fills up and then will start writing to card two, or to backup, where it will write the same thing to both cards. This would be the best setting if you are a pro shooting a wedding or something with this camera. I am sure most pro's use the FF bodies though.

As a side note, I ordered the Sandisk Extreme cards. I was going to order the Transcend cards as they are significantly cheaper. I read reviews on them where it was stated that they are rated at 20 mb/s and only write at 16 mb/s. I am not sure if these would have an issue or not so I just opted to go with what is rated at 30 mb/s and supposedly tested at that speed.

It is waterproof to 10m (33ft) and drop-proof from 1.5m (5ft) and features built-in GPS. READY FOR EXTREME ADVENTURE: THE AW100 IS THE FIRST NIKON COOLPIX BUILT TO CHALLENGE THE ELEMENTS

Nikon's Newest COOLPIX Camera Goes Extreme with Compact Rugged Body, CMOS Sensor for Superior Image Quality and GPS Capability

MELVILLE, N.Y. (August 24, 2011) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the new COOLPIX AW100, a camera that can stand up to the rigorous expectations of those with an appetite for adventure who demand incredible image quality within a strong, durable body. The waterproof, freeze proof and shockproof COOLPIX AW100 is forged with features for adventure seekers who need amazing image quality and Full High Definition (HD) movie recording to keep pace with their active lifestyle.

The COOLPIX AW100’s newly designed rugged chassis is built to withstand harsh environments, yet is compact and lightweight enough to pack for a weekend on the trail. Ready to conquer the rocks, the ice and the waves, the AW100 hosts a myriad of Nikon core technologies aimed at providing stunning images and Full HD 1080p movie recording as well as new GPS technologies for outdoor enthusiasts.

“With detailed engineering and advanced technology, the COOLPIX AW100 is the rugged compact camera for the adventure enthusiast who never slows down and needs a camera that delivers amazing images and stunning Full HD movies without a second thought,” said Lisa Osorio, General Manager of Marketing at Nikon Inc. “The AW100 is as tough as the user that needs it, and it offers a sturdy exterior and advanced technology that enables users to capture life’s triumphant moments.”

Adventures Captured with Stunning Detail
The fast and compact AW100 can be used underwater to a depth of 33 feet, is shock resistant from a drop of five feet and weather resistant down to a frigid 14°F. Whether staring in the face of a raging monsoon or kayaking down the rapids, the battery-chamber, SD card slot, HDMI mini connector and USB/audio video connector are securely covered to prevent intrusion from the elements. Because every extra ounce matters when packing for a trek, the COOLPIX AW100 is one of the thinnest and lightest among true water-proof cameras at approximately 0.9-inches thin and 6.3 ounces light.

Image quality is what sets the COOLPIX AW100 apart from the pack, and the camera features a 16.0-megapixel backside illuminated (BSI) CMOS sensor for improved picture quality even in challenging low-light conditions. Whether scrambling a cliff face in scorching sunlight or carefully treading underneath a dense jungle canopy, users can confidently capture images in a variety of light. The camera uses a high sensitivity mode to capture the action in low-light and also features a maximum ISO of 3200 for the
ability to capture images where lesser cameras do not make the cut. For added versatility, the COOLPIX AW100 also features a 5x Wide Angle Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (35mm equivalent of 28-140mm) to let users shoot wild POV angles and zoom in on the action. When the action starts moving fast, the AW100 helps to create blur free images with the use of Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) to minimize camera shake to capture sharp images and HD movies.

Engineered with Adventure in Mind
The COOLPIX AW100 is born to be extreme and includes features created for the adventurer. The new GPS function and internal map display allow photos to be displayed via location information and saves latitude and longitude information in the image data. Consumers can now shoot and track their route with the included Nikon ViewNX2 software, Nikon’s picture sharing site mypicturetown.com or Google Earth™ to pinpoint the exact orientation at the top of a ski slope or display thumbnails together with a map of the terrain. The camera will also track location while not in use so the user can show an accurate map of their travels up the mountain or kayaking down a river. The AW100 also includes an E-compass, allowing the user to orientate via the LCD screen.

The COOLPIX AW100 also features a new Action Control operation, which allows photographers to assign a function to a swinging motion to swiftly select specific settings such as scene mode by simply shaking the camera, avoiding the need to remove gloves in situations like skiing, diving or hiking. The camera has a large 3.0-inch, bright LCD screen with Clear Color Display and anti-reflective coating, providing the ability to see in difficult lighting conditions. Users are also able to mount the camera securely to various mounting systems via the built-in standard tripod mount.

Full HD Movie Recording
Adventure happens fast, and the AW100 is ready to capture Full HD video to document the day’s climb, hike, bike or dive. The COOLPIX AW100 can capture stereo audio and has the ability to optically zoom during video recording. In addition to Full HD, the camera features a dedicated movie-record button enabling fast, one-touch recording on the fly. Creative movie making can happen with slow and fast action recording options; shoot slow-motion movies at 60, 120 and 240 frames-per-second (fps) or capture fast motion movies at 15 fps.

COOLPIX Technology
The new COOLPIX AW100 also includes Nikon’s EXPEED C2TM image processing engine resulting in enhanced image quality and processing speed. With the high-speed continuous shooting performance of the camera’s CMOS sensor, combined pictures are used for challenging lighting conditions. When HDR controls are accessed in Backlighting Scene Mode, the camera combines consecutive images of different exposure so that a wide tonality is achieved.

Additionally, the COOLPIX AW100 includes Easy Auto Mode, which automatically recognizes the shooting situation and adjusts camera settings accordingly for great pictures. The Smart Portrait System incorporates a series of automatic functions including In-Camera Red-Eye Fix™, Face-Priority AF, Face Priority AE, Smile Mode, Blink Warning, Skin Softening and Pet Portrait mode. Additionally, the COOLPIX AW100 comes with the UE-E23, an attachable 40.5mm thread filter mount adapter.

Price and Availability
The new COOLPIX AW100 is scheduled to be available in early September 2011 and will have an estimated selling price* of $379.95. It will be available in black, blue and a distinctive, highly visible orange.

*Estimated selling price listed only as a suggestion. Actual prices are set by dealers and are subject to change at any time

Nikon CoolPix P7100 announced and previewed
Wednesday, 24 August 2011 04:03 GMT < Previous Next >
Nikon has announced the CoolPix P7100 - an updated version of its P7000 enthusiasts' compact. The P7100 addresses many of the faults that held back its predecessor in our round-up late last year. So, while the specifications improve by gaining an extra control dial and a flip-out LCD, the biggest improvement is to the camera's responsiveness (the image quality never really being in question). We had a chance to use the P7100 and have prepared a brief hands-on preview.

SUPERIOR IMAGE QUALITY AND VERSATILE PERFORMANCE GO FULL THROTTLE WITH THE NEW NIKON COOLPIX P7100 DIGITAL CAMERA

Nikon’s New Flagship COOLPIX Camera Offers Advanced Photo Technologies and Vast Creative Control for the Experienced Photographer

MELVILLE, N.Y. (August 24, 2011) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the new COOLPIX P7100, the digital camera that packs stellar image quality, swift performance and a variety of creative manual controls into a compact, lightweight camera body. The 10.1-megapixel COOLPIX P7100 is the ideal camera that advanced photographers will seek as a companion to their D-SLR camera when both portability and superior image quality are a necessity.

The new COOLPIX P7100 easily assumes the role as the new COOLPIX flagship by delivering amazing image quality, stunning High Definition (HD) movies and high speed performance to create an appealing package for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With an overall emphasis on image quality, consumers can expect rapid response in all aspects of camera operation, which also encompasses a new enhanced AF system for tack-sharp images in a variety of lighting conditions. Whether shooting landscapes or action, users have full creative control with the new 3.0-inch tilting vari-angle LCD screen, full manual features and new Special Effects that add a new dimension to images. With the aid of Nikon core technologies and distinctive new features and controls, the COOLPIX P7100 digital camera shifts image quality and performance into overdrive.

“The new COOLPIX P7100 is an enthusiast compact camera that provides stellar image quality, superior mobility and operability, as well as quick response and performance during even the most challenging shooting situations,” said Lisa Osorio, General Manager of Marketing at Nikon Inc. “The COOLPIX P7100 will allow users to explore their creative freedom, yet delivers the amazing results that they have become accustomed to with their Nikon cameras.”

Emphasis on the Image
Stunning image quality is a hallmark of Nikon products, and the COOLPIX P7100 includes a number of Nikon core technologies such as the high speed EXPEED C2TM image processing engine that is designed to deliver stunning results in diverse situations. New image processing technologies maximize the performance of the large 1/1.7-inch, 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor to deliver sharp, low-noise images that explode with vivid color. By expanding the capabilities of the large CCD sensor, images show reduced noise at both low and high ISO sensitivities. The result is a new level of clean, tonal depth to images, creating an enhanced sense of dimension to any subject and amazingly faithful color reproduction.

Building upon a legacy befitting a world class optics manufacturer, the camera comes equipped with a versatile 7.1x Wide Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens (35mm equivalent to 28-200mm). Additionally, a built-in Neutral Density (ND) filter expands the exposure selection range when shooting in slow shutter speeds and in maximum aperture settings. The 7.1x Wide Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED glass lens is constructed with two Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements to help achieve high reproduction capability with less chromatic aberration when capturing images and videos. Additionally, the COOLPIX P7100 uses optical Vibration Reduction (VR) to produce blur free photos while shooting images or HD video handheld or in low-light.

Rapid Response When it Counts
With enhanced high speed performance and quick response, the COOLPIX P7100 can capture decisive moments with confidence. The new Nikon P7100 features a new intuitive user interface that reacts seamlessly for high quality results in the blink of an eye. With blazing fast start-up, imperceptible release lag and enhanced shot to shot buffering, the P7100 promises to be ready at a moment’s notice. Operational workflow speed has been enhanced, such as switching time for various functions including playback, shooting, menu and button operation as well as navigation. The camera can also capture full resolution JPEG images at up to 1.2 frames-per-second (fps), and gives shooters enhanced response when shooting NRW (RAW) images both as a single frame and consecutively. Additionally, the COOLPIX P7100 is compatible with the latest high speed SDXC memory cards for maximum performance.

The 7.1x NIKKOR lens has been paired with an enhanced AF system to deliver sharp images and HD movies in a variety of shooting scenarios. Whether tripod mounted to capture a distant vista or shooting a candid portrait, the result is amazingly fast focus acquisition that is consistently sharp throughout the entire focal range, even on a moving subject.

Superior Creative Control for the Advanced User
Detailed engineering led to the authentic styling of the COOLPIX P7100, which calls upon many of the features that Nikon D-SLR cameras are known for, including easily accessible mode dials, rounded curves and friendly ergonomics, all housed within a compact form factor. Consumers can compose through the bright optical viewfinder or by the vivid 3.0-inch 921,000-dot tilting vari-angle LCD screen. The new tilt screen enables more flexible shooting at creative angles, including down low, overhead or for ease-of-use when mounted on a tripod. The clear color vari-angle LCD display with anti-reflective coating produces high resolution and faithful color reproduction with a wide viewing angle.

The camera’s four exposure modes (Program, Shutter, Aperture and Manual) provide creative control over image capture. For added versatility, the COOLPIX P7100 has a sensitivity range up to ISO 3200, but can also be set to Hi 1 at full resolution (ISO 6400 equivalent). The P7100 also offers functions that enable superior rendering when shooting at high sensitivities, including a Low Noise Night Mode and a Noise Reduction Filter. ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800 in Low Noise Night Mode) to ensure sharp, crisp images when shooting in low-light or photographing fast-moving subjects.

For further creative control, the camera offers multiple new Special Effects and Filter Effects to create truly inspiring images. The new Zoom Exposure automates this typically difficult technique to create dynamic images with a slow shutter. Consumers can also choose the Defocus Filter to produce intentional, artful blur or use the Cross Process to create nostalgic and imaginative color tones in
images. A new Creative Monochrome Filter can also be implemented to create a solarized look and feel to images or affect grain size in monochrome photos. Shooters can capture a wide tonal range in their images by utilizing the built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) function as part of the Backlighting Mode, and can shoot in High/Low Key, Sepia and Painting Modes. While in Playback Mode, images can also be altered with a Fisheye Effect or Cross Screen Filter.

The design and interface of the COOLPIX P7100 has been created with the shooter in mind. It boasts two command dials including a new front mounted sub-command dial, which can be used to access settings and adjustments while holding the grip of the camera. The dials provide advance control and a sense of analog operation when using the camera for an enjoyable photographic experience. This control is implemented to simplify various operations using minimal controls. The COOLPIX P7100 also features a quick menu dial on the top of the camera. Through the quick menu dial, controls like ISO sensitivity, White Balance, advanced bracketing functions, My Menu, Picture Control and image size can be swiftly selected to capture desired results. Additionally, the camera’s Zoom Memory function enables the selection of a desired focal length during shooting.

For those shooting movies, the COOLPIX P7100 records High Definition (HD) movies at 720p (30 fps) with stereo sound through the built-in microphone. Users can also attach an optional external microphone, such as Nikon’s ME-1 microphone, via the stereo microphone jack. The P7100 also incorporates new movie recording features such as lens zooming during recording, a gain-up function to adjust the optional external microphone and an AE/AF lock available during recording, which is similar to that of a D-SLR camera. Additionally, the camera includes a mini HDMI connector that enables playback on HD televisions and other HDMI-enabled devices.

The COOLPIX P7100 can be connected to the optional 0.75x Wide-Angle Convertor WC-E75A, which allows for focal lengths as wide as 21mm (35mm format equivalent). P7100 users can also take advantage of Nikon's Creative Lighting System with the built-in accessory shoe that supports Nikon's i-TTL flash control, including compatibility with the SB-400, SB-700 and SB-900 speedlights.

Price and Availability
The Nikon COOLPIX P7100 will be available throughout the United States beginning mid September 2011 at an estimated selling price* of $499.95. For more information, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

Finally announced

Nikon has announced the J1 and V1 small sensor mirrorless camera. Built around what the company is calling the 'CX' format 10MP CMOS sensors, the cameras represent an entirely new line. They are able to shoot 1080p video and combines both phase detection and contrast detection autofocus. The 1" type sensor (13.2mm x 8.8mm) gives a 2.7x crop. The J1 kit with 10-30mm lens will cost $649.99 while the V1 kit, with magnesium body and viewfinder, will be $899.95

It may seem odd that Nikon would build its mirrorless system around a sensor so much smaller than the ones being used by its rivals. We think it makes a lot of sense for the company. Click here to read why.

Furthermore, the J1 camera makes a personal style statement with a variety of matching colored camera bodies and lenses.

The heart of the new J1 camera is the new Nikon developed CX-format, 10.1 megapixel High-Speed AF CMOS sensor that helps make this camera the pinnacle of portable performance. The newly developed CMOS sensor has been engineered for amazing image quality in a variety of lighting conditions, with a native ISO range of 100-3200 (6400 Hi-1) for maximum versatility. Images captured with this new sensor exhibit striking colors, vivid hues and rich detail so lifelike, it's the next best thing to being there as memories unfold.

Nikon's exclusive new EXPEED 3™ image processing engine drives the system and is the catalyst behind the camera's rapid response, fast AF and high-speed performance. In addition, the new dual core EXPEED 3 processor works to maximize battery efficiency while yielding images and movies with low noise and vibrant tones. The Nikon J1 is engineered for maximum ease of use, featuring a clean button layout and intuitive graphical interface. Distractions and menus are minimized; creating a clear path to the camera's advanced functions, further unleashing creative potential.

The Fastest One

From first steps to first date, life moves fast and the Nikon J1 is the camera to keep pace. The camera seemingly anticipates action with amazing autofocus, response time and operation. The new advanced hybrid AF system is the world's fastest autofocus1, allowing consumers to capture more of their world than ever before. The Nikon J1 features new focal plane phase detection AF that reacts instantly to deliver incredibly fast, split-second response. Wherever action is happening in the frame, the 73-point AF system will get the shot. This newly developed hybrid system continuously evaluates the scene at hand for optimal results, and can switch between phase detection and contrast detect AF to best suit the scene. Whether shooting in low-light conditions like a late night block party, or a fast moving pick-up game, photographers can capture details with confidence.

When the action is happening, users can also shoot at a fast 10 frames per second (fps), with full adaptive AF for frame after frame of images with incredible sharpness and detail. Additionally, the scene can be captured at full resolution up to a staggering 60 fps (AF locked), which is the world's fastest continuous shooting speed2. So go ahead and capture a best friend's high dive at the next pool party, and then confidently share every aspect of the leap with stunning detail.

The One That Inspires a New Way to Capture with Motion Snapshot

Motion Snapshot is a new approach to capturing images that will dramatically alter the way we perceive digital photography. By selecting the Motion Snapshot icon from the Mode Dial at the back of the camera, consumers can capture fleeting moments with staggering depth and emotion like never before. The result unites a frozen still image with a slow-motion movement set to a built-in audio soundtrack to create a portrayal of an occurrence with maximum impact. With Motion Snapshot, users are now able to relive memories in stunning detail, as real movement and depth are included in the image. Motion Snapshot provides a way to once again experience someone's hair flowing in the breeze or relaxing scenes like waves crashing or rustling leaves that evoke an emotional response.

Consumers are also able to create masterpieces of moving images from multiple files using the included Short Movie Creator software. This easy-to-use, intuitive software works in conjunction with Nikon's View NX2 to make managing photos and movies fun and easy. With these programs, users are empowered to organize, share and edit photos, Motion Snapshots and HD movies. Users are also able to connect and share Motion Snapshot files using Nikon's my Picturetown, an online resource at www.mypicturetown.com.

The One to Set Trends

Both the camera technology and exterior design were inspired by the pursuit of balance, as a device that lives in perfect accord with any lifestyle. The lines are clean and minimalist, the colors are vibrant, creating a stylish accessory for every personality. The design is meant to inspire creativity, with a simple interface and easy-to-use camera controls, intuitively placed for any user. Switching from modes and accessing advanced features is easy, enabling the user to further push creative boundaries, whether trusting the smart automatic settings or creatively exploring the full manual control modes.
Control highlights include a Mode Dial, with the four main common functions readily available, in addition to a Command Dial with common camera settings. The new "F" (feature) button is a new design element to Nikon cameras, which automatically brings up relevant menus and options based on what mode the camera is set.

The Nikon 1 system is further complemented by fashionable, premium accessories tailored to perfectly fit a user's lifestyle. These accessories include a custom fit body case set available in a variety of colors, as well as fashionable, color coordinated leather neck and hand straps.

The Smart One: Nikon's Smart Photo Selector

The new Nikon J1 is an advanced camera with interchangeable lenses that features new technologies aimed at creating better pictures, easier. Nikon's new Smart Photo Selector feature strives to deliver a perfect image every time. When a "can't miss" photo opportunity arises, users can switch to the Smart Photo Selector mode which uses the camera's pre-cache to start shooting and storing images. All of these images are analyzed within the camera, and the best photo is selected based on a number of factors including exposure, focus and advanced facial recognition. While the camera suggests the best image, five frames are recorded, providing the user a choice of their favorite photo. What's more, the J1 also includes favorite core Nikon technologies, such as Active D-lighting, Auto Scene Selector and Picture Controls.

One Device That Also Captures HD Movies

The new CX-format CMOS sensor produces breathtaking Full HD movies at 1080p (30 fps). Users can also shoot at a rapid 60 fps (1080i), or elevate the production with additional 30/60/400 and 1200 fps modes for super slow motion effects. The J1 is made to be flexible, and can capture both HD movies and high resolution images simultaneously. Simply press the shutter while recording to freeze the action with a high quality image file with sharp focus.

Additionally, the Nikon J1 applies noise reduction to movie files, giving the user amazingly sharp, crisp movies with deep black levels. This feature makes this the ideal camera for shooting movies when light is less than ideal, such as indoors or at night. A full HD movie can record a full 29 minutes, while the senses are further treated to sound sampled in full stereo for lifelike reproduction.

One Vision, Two Distinct Cameras

The Nikon J1 is the model designed for those consumers who use a camera as part of their connected lifestyle; always carrying it to bring passion and depth to visual storytelling. Both the camera and the lenses come in a variety of matching stylish colors, including white, pink, red, silver and black. Photos and movies are easily composed and shared on the bright 3.0-inch high-resolution LCD monitor. With the aid of the concealed pop-up flash, consumers can easily add fill flash as needed or shoot in most conditions including low-light.

The Nikon 1 V1 is for photo enthusiasts who value interchangeable lens versatility and desire a small form factor. In fact, it's the world's smallest and lightest camera in the world with interchangeable lens versatility and an electronic viewfinder (EVF)3. Aimed at the user excited about creating amazing images and movies, the Nikon V1 has added features including a 1.4 million dot high resolution EVF that automatically activates when the user raises the camera to their eye. In addition to the high-speed electronic shutter, the magnesium alloy body conceals a high performance mechanical shutter that affords tactile feedback and expanded shooting options.

The V1 camera also features Nikon's new Multi-Accessory Port for attaching options such as the new SB-N5 compact speedlight, or the GP-N100 GPS module. For those making movies, the V1 has a stereo microphone input for professional quality audio.

I love the ULTRA simplistic look.

Other than that...meh. The smaller sensor with greater focal enhancement is a step backwards from what I want.

I agree, but It does carve out that niche cleaner - the sensor is what, almost exactly inbetween the size of a point and shoot sensor and the entry level SLR sensors?

If it means smaller/cheaper lenses - then power to them, I guess.

Thats true...and we'll see what happens. I read the preview.com article. They are releasing a 10mm 2.8 pancake (27mm equivalent) so They would be up my alley. I wonder if they'll get the ISO performance out of the smaller sensor.

I'm not upgrading from my GF1 anytime soon...so I can enjoy sitting back and watching this all play out for once.

I read dpreviews article on these cameras last night.

I'm still interested in learning more...they do seem to packing some pretty amazing technology...but...and there is always a but...

They are openly going for a less "pro" crowd. They want the people moving up from point and shoots. Its the same things Panasonic decided to shift their focus towards with the GF line, effectively alienating all the higher end shooters.

It seems like only Olympus and Sony are really playing in this niche with offerings for more advanced users. And right now Olympus is using an older chip with less effective noise and ISO performance by comparison...so I guess Sony wins at the moment?

It seemed to hint there are manual controls...but in the menus...so how deep are they buried, how easy will it be to make the V1 a manual style camera for a higher end user. Cause right now, its very much set up for point and shoot style use.

if you're referring to the NEX 7, that price tag is pretty hard to swallow tho
