Seriously, if I was looking for a new camera and could afford it, the D300 would definitely be win. However, on a budget, not making money with the gear and already owning some glass, I could not justify it.

are you serious?

digic II vs digic III?

12bit raw vs 14bit raw?

that right there justifies the 40D over the 30D

The D80 uses older technology although it's still a good camera. For the $1000, I would pick up the Nikon D40, either the Nikon 18-55VR lens or Nikon 50mm 1.4 or 1.8. You'll need a clear filter for the lens, bag, memory, and an extra battery for any weekend trips. You'll be surprised and how fast all this adds up.

You got a lot of choices with the filter, bag, and size of memory so do some research.

I got 2000 shots with a full charge on the D50. So if you go away for the weekend or plan on shooting a lot of shots get the extra battery. It's better to to have it than not.

Also when getting in to photography spend the money on lenses. Camera technology changes every few months just like computers. Your lenses will last you forever.

WTF! You guys are all confusing me.

It went from...

Nikon D80----> Canon 40D ----> Nikon D300----> Nikon D40?

So, Canon 40D is outdated? wtf?

I'm willing to spend $1200 top for body and one decent lens. Which one?

I understand that you were trying to help, but no need to be a dick about this. Not everyone can afford a nice camera like you. I got $1200 in my hand and that's it. I'm not going to spend anymore than that.

thanks!

I don't have any camera...wish I had the D300. But seriously, if I had 1k handed to me by my parents, I would REALLY think about spending the extra $600 and get the D300. But if $1200 is it, then the 40D is your best bet...

it was announced aug 20 2007, and the D300 was announced aug 23rd 2007.

he is saying its outdated technology because of the extra stuff you get with the D300 and of course the extra cost that comes with it.

and 40D is a great camera.

lets see the ohh so great D300 get 6.5fps with 14bit raws..!!

(if you dont know, it drops down to 2.5fps in 14bit mode. with or without grip)

Damn.... This got me thinking again! D300 does sound good, but I really don't want to go anything above $1200.

sigh! what to do...

There will always be something better, but the 40D is plenty of camera and will last you a long time.

I appreciate all you guys inputs and help, and I finally decided to go with Canon 40D.

B&H is selling it for $1129.95. Should I get the 3 year protection or none?

No reason to switch from Canon to Nikon if you're going with the 40D. All of your accessories will have to be re-acquired.

What are you smoking?

I came from a Nikon D50 to a Canon 40D. When making my decision I did a lot of research on forums. I really wanted a D300, but couldn't justify the $1900 (and no I am not buying that off eBay) over my $1000 40D.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos40d/

The 40D beat the 30D is 22 out of the 26 of the specs the remaining 4 they are tied.

I agree though that a Used 30D would save the OP some money he can invest in better glass. But that's the same logic I gave for the 40D instead of the D300.

For a beginner it'll be a new world and challenging to learn. As long as he shoots for the right growth curve I think getting a 40D will give him plenty of room to grow.

I've seen garbage come out of a 1Ds MKIII as well as 5D's alll with L lenses. Likewise I've seen wonderful well composed images come out of a D40 / Xti.

It's not all about the gear, get something you're happy with and grow with it. When you're ready to move on then make the pull on something that'll help you grow even more.

I switched to Canon and I'm a happy camper The only level at which people from Canon switch back is to buy the D3. It's a budget buy for the price when the Canon model is $3000 more. And even with that it's not a direct comparison.

I have the say Canon has an extremely well versed line up of lenses. The cost is also roughly 30% less on MSRP than Nikon for top end glass.

All my friends shoot nikon and give me crap about converting, they all shoot D200, D300 and I love swapping gear.

We can debate forever which is better, nikon or canon.

My choice was driven by cost. the 40D fits right in the pocket between the D80 and D300. I'm glad I bought it, I love my 24-70L.

Here were the weekends samples. 40D and 24-70L f2.8

These were shot @ night with only available light. 40D and Sigma 30mm f1.4

Its a bit late of me to chime in but i say a 40d is awesome. My friend had it when i got my d80 and i started envying him for alot of his features and quality.

I think your good man, the 40d is a great camera since nikon has nothing in between the d80 and the d300, unless you go older gen cameras.

d300 is worthy of the money but not for everyone.

Enjoy lets see some your pics asap!

Pixel ---
I would have to agree, i never like comparing cameras nikon and canon, but canon has alot of budget lens that i wished nikon could offer. The l series lens are crazy as well.

besides the specs the 40d is still great for the price.

I came from a rebel xti (stolen)> nikon d80 (sold) for a d300.

In between got the chance to play with an rebel xt nikon d50 and canon 40d.

I haven't ordered it yet.

I had to pay off my cc debit first.

Is B&H better or Amazon?

B&H is selling 40d with 28-135 for $1129.95
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/6...l_Cameras.html
and
Amazon is selling exact same setup for $1128.88
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-40D-Digi...3857016&sr=8-2

I think Amazon just lowed their price to match B&H's price.

The 40D? Adorama, B&H will give you great customer service. You can always find something locally. I believe Ritz and Wolf cameras now PM Adorama, I have a catalog from them that states it, if I find it I'll can that in for you.
