Some have edits and some maybe straight off the camera. I have a d3000, had a d90 and i have a d7000. The images from a d90 and d7000 are going to be larger both in pixel and file size, however...its not the camera but the photographer.
You can take amazing pictures with a D3000 so I wouldn't worry myself about the quality too much, specially if its not for professional use. Here are the things to worry about when considering a d3000 over a d7000....
D3000 only has one dial which means you will have to press a combination of buttons when in manual mode to fully control the Aperture and Shutter speed. Higher end camera have 2.
The higher end cameras have better performing ISO , Higher Shutter speed capability and higher resolution on the LCD screen, so you get to appreciated the image almost instantly.. oh not to mention, the d3000 processes very slow so wait about 2 seconds after picture is taken to view (being generous). One of the biggest difference is that the D3000 doesn't have a built in AF motor, so if you don't get AF-S or lens with built in AF motors (BIM when dealing with Tamron) you lens will not Auto Focus.
There are many other technical spec differences but these are the ones that stick out to me.
D3000 light and easy to carry around, d7000 awesome, use D90 best value...these are all withing the DX sensor. D3100 has video and higher MP, D5000 same but with a swivel screen.
As for free Photoshop.. the d7000 bring Photoshop Element 9 free..... I don't use it. I have Adobe Master Suite CS5.
This pictures were shot during the same session.
D3000 + 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 VR

D7000 + 108mm f2.8 VR macros

And the my old D90 which I miss.

All of these pictures were taken with a D3100 which has very minor differences compared to the D3000...

Thanks.
I wouldn't say minor. The d3000 has 10.2mp vs d3100 14.2mp. Video, options, speeds are different. I have shot both cameras the D3100 is far better than a d3000.

Did you have decent glass already? $1000 is less then the body itself retails, where did you get it? I bought the kit when it first came out.
edit: Just noticed your last comment. Thanks. I'm still learning as I go. It's been a lot of fun.
Glass is everything... and the more MP being cramped into these small Crop sensor , the higher the demand for sharper glass.
Not to mention a good glass is really what matters , not the body.
D7000 is a superb camera, not just in quality but in features. Has the lattes metering system and AF system Nikon has to offer.

as for free PS... If you go to YouTube, there are a bunch of videos showing you how, I can't remember which one I followed, but it worked
THAT said, I mainly use Lightroom 3 anyway (which was paid for)

OK Let me as a Question... For Purposes of Starting/Newbie whats a GOOD well let me say GREAT Camera that I wont regret buying? I want something that will last me some time and I wont regret purchasing in a few years from now.
Around $500-$700 range depending on what I get. I'm not a Photographer so I don't need anything out of this world, I just want something that if I have to take pictures one day I will have a Bad Ass Camera to do it with. I would like a Fast Shutter speed as well as and the ability to change to different wider angel lenses. Im over hear tryna speak like I know what im talking about but I really don't ha ha
like alot of guys here have said the d3100 is a great camera for the price... you can usually get them around 650 if you look around. also they make a variety of lenses from a bunch of different brands for it so you have alot of different options with lenses. plus hd video is one of my favorite things about the camera.
Which program are you using to upload to the your PC?
Are you on Mac or PC?
Also for those who start out with a d3000 or d31000, chances are you will want to upgrade. If you can find a use D90 for the price I would recommend that instead.
My progression
D90>D7000 and as soon a d a new FX body comes out (replacement for d700) I am jumping on it.
I have a D3000 (really bought it for my daughter's birthday) which i use as secondary. For example, I go shooting and want to use my Sigma 10-20mm ultra wide, but also my 70-300 or 105 macro, or simply my 17-50mm...and dont want to be changing lenses out in the elements. The difference between d3000/3100 or d5000/d51000 vs d90 and up is huge.. from the minute you hold the camera. Let say the d3100 is P&S in a DSLR body. Built very fragile.
That just my 2 cents
At the end .. the body doesn't matter.. the glass does. Invest in a nice lens an you will get nice pictures.

^^ Yeah I would think the same. Make sure your PC can play those type of files first. Them dam Codex are a PITA Sometimes. Ive had to get Packages to play different HD/Blueray Files on my PC since thats the only type of movies i would play. JGuerra23 Do you know if the D3100 has a Mic to record Audio as well when doing Video?

OK In Your Opinion... Does the ISO and the 14MP Jump over the D3000 make a difference if I'm not really interested in HD Video?

i had the same problem with my d3100 and found out that windows media player didnt have the codec. So i downloaded VLC media player which will play just about anything and it works fine. Also if you convert the file to another video format it works with WMP. I use dvdvideosoft studio to convert. Its free and really simple to use and has of alot of useful audio video programs. http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ is where you can get the entire studio for free.
if you want to see a sample of a d3100 video take a look at the exhaust drive by video we took of tyler's car. http://s953.photobucket.com/albums/a...t=DSC_0005.mp4

unless you are serious about video creation and editing the d3100 isnt bad. its a good feature to have when you dont have a real video camera with you. its also nice to have because its light enough to use with my windshield mount. i just got sony's semi professional handycam with interchangeable lenses for when i want to take serious videos but it is really bulky.
Yeah Im not a big fan of Video, but wouldn't mind paying an extra fee to have a Camera that does a pretty good job at it while sill being able to get bad ass pictures from the same device
Hey that's my car!
I bought my D60 because I didn't want/need video recording. After attending car meets and such for over a year, I realized I wanted to record video but didn't want a whole separate device to do it. Therefore I got the D3100 which combines the best of both worlds.
