New lens time...Need help
I need help deciding on a new standard zoom for my T1i. My current zoom in this focal range is a Sigma 17-70.
f/2.8 and image stabilization are things that I'm certain I want. I'm debating mostly between the Canon 17-55 IS or the yet unreleased Sigma 17-50 OS.
Granted there are not any reviews out for the Sigma, but I wonder if there's even a chance it be any where near the IQ of the 17-55...Plus the Canon still trumps it with FT-M and ring USM. But is it enough to justify the $1000+ price tag vs the $670 of the Sigma?
I would generally wait, but there's an event I would like to use the lens for on June 8th. Not sure when the release date for the Sigma is...or if 3rd party reviews will even be out by then.
I eliminated the Tamron 17-50 VC out of the equation due to reviews with complaints of focusing problems and pictures being soft. Such a shame too, considering the 17-50 non-VC is so loved.
Not sure if it will make a difference, but I guess I should mention that I plan on picking up a 7D in the near future. I shoot just about everything, indoors and out...just whatever fascinates me at the time.
Thanks ahead for everyone's input.

all work and no play
given that it is a considerable difference in cost, if that event that you want it for is the only real pressing use you have in mind for this new lens, maybe you could rent a 17-55 for it and wait to for the 17-50 to be released and a few people put out some reviews?

I miss my 03 CL-S :(
The 17-55 is worth saving a little extra. I don't know anything about the Sigma, but you won't feel like you've overspent with the 17-55. The FTM comes in handy, but the USM's fast & silent focusing speed is worth the extra money if the Sigma doesn't have it.

Sigma's are good if you get a good copy, but they are very hit or miss. I would save up for Canon.

Burning Brakes
I have a sigma 18-50/2.8 EX lens that had to be sent back to to them for calibration. It took forever and I was pissed, but that thing is amazingly sharp now!!

I drive a Subata.

i'd go with 17-55.. it has some good reviews on it.

My brother had to do that 3 times with his sigma 17-70. He was PISSED. He likes it now that it works correctly though.
