New D40
I don't have a D40, but I've got a D70 and a D200.
My biggest tip: get out and start playing with it. Get a really nice lens in the focal length you will use most (I've got the Nikon 17-55 DX f/2.8 - much much better than the kit lens). Prowl the critique forums on dpreview and other sites for technique ideas. Get a high capacity SD card. If it has a flash show, get an SB-800 flash unit. If you don't completely understand exposure, get a book or find a good web site and learn it.
Use manual mode when practicing and especially learn to use the metering display and adjust the exposure manually. You will have so much more control over your photos you won't believe it.
Get Photoshop, and shoot in Raw.
