Looking for a sharp Nikkor zoom lens

I'm looking for a Nikkor zoom lens (around $400-500) that'll take very sharp images. I was looking at:

AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5D IF

What do you guys think about the lenses mentioned above?

Are there other lenses you guys would recommend?

Thanks

The 28-105 is the higher rated of the two but they are both quite different. The 18-70 is a DX lens so it's designed for the DSLRs. If you're shooting film, I don't think you can use this lens. Otherwise, it just comes down to what you value: wide angle or telephoto. 10mm on the wide end is a significant difference.

What other lenses do you have? If your camera is digi, the 28-105 (42-157mm equiv) might be a little long for a walk around lens.

I have a Nikon D100 with 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens right now so I'm looking for a decent zoom.

Thanks.

That 28-105 is a decent sharp lens and has the added benefit of macro capabilities. My brother has one that he uses with a D100 and D2X.

OK, but that still doesnt really answer the question. Do you want a wide zoom? A telephoto zoom? or a middle of the road.

You also speak of sharp. Well, the sharper the optics the more it will cost you.
Define sharp. Pretty all the nikkor lenses will give you a sharp image. The higher quality ones will give you the best.

this is a little above your price range but for what the lense is I think it would fit your needs well.

That 18-200mm Nikkor has been out of stock everywhere since early December. Though by all accounts it is a great lens, if you want one right now this one is out of range.
