looking to purchase first quality digital camera

I am looking to purchase my first quality digital camera. I have had digital cameras before but they were all pretty cheap and the picture was crappy. What should I look for when purchasing a good digital camera? Any specific brands I should choose or stay away from? Thanks

Since I am not looking into getting into professional photography or anything I would say my max is 500 bucks. Is that too cheap?

Canon G7 http://www.steves-digicams.com/2006_reviews/g7.html

or

canon S3 IS (many here have this one), may not be able to find the S3, the S5 just replaced it.

When ready to buy, check the prices at www.bhphoto.com or www.amazon.com, no matter which camera you decide on, you'll get a better price than local box stores.

The G7 is an appealing little camera and would give you something to grow into as you progressed.

G7 is a point-and-shoot with SLR-like image quality. It gets a nod from the srika camp, for sure!

if you can pony up a hair more, an entry-level DSLR is the best way to get your feet wet and leaves enough headroom for future usage (i.e. go somewhere with your hobby)
