Let's See Your Fireworks Pictures - 2007
I wish I would have thought ahead a little bit and brought my mini-tripod. Wasn't the best spot to see the fireworks but it worked out okay. We were on my friend's rooftop deck in Locust Point (Baltimore, MD)

And a quick animated gif I made from some of the finale shots

I did mange to use the side of the deck to my advantage in order to brace myself and the camera somewhat. But definitely nothing as close to as useful as my 10" tripod would have been.

Man, you got that gif mooovin'!!!!
I was going to set up last night, but we got some wicked freeking storms last evening, I got scared for my equipment. We had hail about the size of quarters for awhile and some funnel clouds. When we went up the street (to watch fireworks) my DTV was fading out again from the clouds.

Thanks for the compliments, guys!
Btw, nice shots Shalooby and mrsteve. Shalooby - I see you went with the longer exposure time. I didn't really do that with many of my shots because I thought they'd look weird. Your pictures prove me very, very wrong though.
I brought a cheapo tripod with me (didn't want the crowds to wreck the bogen). The camera is a Canon Rebel XTi with the 18-55 kit lens, btw.
I played around with the exposure a little, but kept it between 1-3 seconds for the exposure time (except for the finale shots). All in all, there were about 260 shots taken, and only 9 that I liked. 3.5% success rate of pictures = ouch!

Thanx. I went completely manual with the exposure set to bulb. I used the remote which works well, click the button to open the shutter then click it again to close. I waited to open it until right after the shells burst; left it open as long as possible, then tried to close it before the next one burst.
I used a 18 to 55mm set to 18, focus set to infinity and aperture between f9 and f11. Oh yea, its a Nikon D50, tripod, viewfinder covered.

These all look great, I really like the ones of the light reflecting off of other peoples heads too.
I really wanted to try some of the light illuminating other things shots this year, but damnit I left my battery charger in mexico last week.

Bottom of my driveway. They fire them off from the Herndon golf course which is right across the street from me. I have to come clean as well and confess to a "little" bit of cropping. Out of the 60 odd shots I took these are the keepers. Nobody's perfect eh?

That's what digital is for. NumberFive, I think shot some 300. I'd be doing the same.

Thanks everyone. It's actually more difficult to shoot fireworks than I thought. There are so many variables to consider. Ambient light, distance to the actual fireworks, the correct exposure when there is one explosion vs three explosion at a single given time. I must have taken over 100 shots with only 10 or so that came out how I wanted it.
Here's another one.

I was less than block away from the area where they set off the fireworks. So I ended up using my superwide (Sigma 10-20mm) for all the fireworks pcitures. The landscape shots really show the distortion, but the portraits came out decent.
