Just got a DSLR & question about lens + phx comic con pics!

Hello everyone I just bought my first DSLR camera. It's a Canon t2i that I bought on clearance at my local Target for really cheap. I would want to mainly use it to shoot video so what lens should I purchase in the future that would be great for that?

Now I am not going to get it anytime soon since I paid a lot for the camera but is there anyone that has a lot of experience in shooting video with their DSLR that would recommend a particular lens or accessory for that matter?

Also, any tips on how to improve my photography would be helpful as well! Here are some fun shots I took so far, they are from my recent trip to Phoenix Comic Con:

Any tips on how to capture fast movement without flash?

For shoot without the flash and capture the movement, I believe you will want to open the aperture wide and set your shutter fast. I am not sure to what range ISO the t2i will offer decent quality, but the higher the ISO number (i.e. ISO800, 1600, 3200) will allow you to capture the images you are looking for without the need of the flash. The pictures will display more noise, the higher up in the ISO range you go, so you will have to find the right balance. As for lenses, I am not sure, but you may need more than one to accomplish what you want. The Canon L lenses will offer the best overall quality, but will cost quite a bit. I am a Nikon guy, so I do not know what lenses they offer.

I'll build on this. You want to go higher ISO/faster shutter...going with the aperture last. You go full open on the aperture and you have a very small depth of field, so your focus will become more if an issue than motion blur.

As for video...all depends on what your doing. There is no one lens thats better than the others. But as mentioned the L series is Canon's best glass.

Thanks for chiming in. As I am learning myself as I go, I often forget about the DOF associated with wide open aperture. You would think I would remember being that I often take pictures wide open to achieve nice bokeh, since I like how it makes the subject stand out.

imo have a lens with IS as well. usually when i shoot outside in daylight. im shooting at f/11. You can start with the basic 18-55mm

for video im talking about

50mm f/1.8 would be best for you to start with as well

I mean physics are physics but it also really depends how good you are with handheld (unless you're using a tripod)

a good all around cheaper lens would be a 18-135 or 28-135mm without breaking the bank.

Gotcha. Not really sure what Canon lenses go for. The only thing I believe is that they seem to be a bit cheaper then Nikon lenses for comparable specs.

One of the most important things to remember when shooting video is the quality of sound. I'd recommend getting a good external microphone as I believe the T2i has an external microphone input jack.

+1 Not to mention the built in mic is mono only so sound quality is not very good.

I love digitalrev. Watch it all the time. The one where he reviews the Lytro camera is pretty funny. He keeps comparing it to a sex toy. He also commented on the small screen, she said that he had to squint to see it, and that made him look more chinese than he normally looks. He's a funny guy.

There's rarely a dull moment in their videos.
