Unhappy I broke my tripod...

Okay, I broke my old one as I was playing with it. I need a replacement, but not trying to spend too much on tripod right now. I'm just looking for something that will get the job done (best bang for the buck).

Which one do you guys recommend, and where can I pick it up?

I'm planning on getting a nicer one later on, but not now.

thanks!

Depends on what you mean by not wanting to spend a whole lot.

I got mine (a carbon fiber tripod) for $200 from bestbuy. Ritz I remember was selling one too for $200 that had a detachable plate.

Not sure if that is more than you are wanting to spend though.

I would suggest getting something decent.

If you get a good solid one that isn't too expensive, you may not find the need to replace it later.

Just a thought.

^ I have to agree with that. I think it would be wiser to put that $200 or whatever you would spend now towards a nicer tripod, rather than waste it on an inadequate to get you by for the time being.

Is weight an issue? If not, I posted a similar thread with some helpful replies last week.

I totally didn't see your thread. It wasn't the weight issue, broke top mount while I was trying to adjust it.

thanks for the link... I see that they are really good rating, and price isn't so bad either. Are they pretty well known brand?

Depending on the head you choose, go to a store and see what the plate feels like attached to the camera. I got the RC4 head because it seemed more stable than the RC2 (don't know if there is any validity to that, but hey, it's 2 better!), but the plate is pretty big, and since I leave it attached for now, it may be an issue for others (I am used to it).

I have the bogen/manfrotto 190xprob legs with the 488RC4 head, but in retrospect probably should have gotten the 055 legs, as they are a bit sturdier, albeit heavier. The xprob feature of the 190 is pretty cool,. though, for rapidly shifting the center column to the horizontal!

Very happy with the head for now.

I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 055MF3 carbon fiber legs and an Acratech ball head.

That stuff, along with the plate, ran me around $800.

I just order a Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared Head. I like my Acratech ballhead, but needed something a little more precise.

Jax, talking about the camera plate, I was trying to find a regular joe plate, nothing fancy for my 1D3, couldn't find one from Acratech. So that left Kirk or RRS about $140. I took the $40 plate off of my 30D's grip and the damn thing fits. Saved $$$

OK, did anybody else even remotely think, from the thread title, that this might be a "sprained wang" thread?

I need help...

It's always nice to save some $$, for sure. I remember I got my plate from B&H, but I don't recall the brand.
