Help me decide on a lens please... 35mm vs 24mm

I have a 40D. I'd like a faster lens to use with indoor parties and lower light situations. I'm thinking of the following but can't decide:

24mm f/1.4L II ~ $1600
35mm f/1.4L ~ $1100

I hate using flash indoors and am hoping to be able to get by without a flash using one of these lenses. The 24mm is newer, but i'm not sure if the the wider view is worth $500. I've read the 24mm is sharp wide open where the 35mm you have better results stopped down to 2.0. Any opinions?

17-40mm f/4L ( i know the F Stop is a little higher, but more lense for less $ makes sense).

50mm 1.4 is nice too, not quite an L series lense...

I am also comparing apples to oranges coming from a FF 5D.

I have the 17-40, but it not fast enough indoors without pushing the ISO high. I have a 50m 1.8 which is great indoors, just a little long. I'm going to try and use the 17-40 in 35mm and 24mm lengths for a while to see if there is 1 focal length that I'd use more.

go for the 24L, it should be wide enough to use at parties.

i wouldnt suggest the 17-40L if you dont plan on using flash indoors.

the 24L and 35L have a 3 stop advantage over the 17-40L

ex, if the 17-40L gets 1/4th of a second, the 24L/35L would get 1/30th

thats the beauty of primes, no zooms have such a fast aperature.

You don't say which body, if you have a cropped body the 35 will be too long, you'll need the 24 for indoors. And just because you get a faster lens doesn't mean you won't need a light source, such as a hotshoe flash.

+1

I had to get the 16-35mm L instead of the 24-70mm L cuz of the crop

According to his post, he has a 40D, which is cropped.

Should get the 24mm in that case.

Like so many lens decisions, it comes down to what you will be shooting. Given your criteria of parties, I would say probably the 24mm, because you'll likely be shooting in rooms where you can't back up too much. The 35mm will give you an equivalent 56mm with the 40D, so it may not be wide enough for those conditions. The 24mm will put you right at 38mm, which still isn't super wide.

Thanks everyone. I played around with these focal lengths on my 17-40 and 24mm does make more sense for indoors. I ordered one today. I'll let you know how it goes.

I totally missed that.

I would go with the 24mm because of the crop (38mm). The 35 is much closer to a portrait FL a 58mm.
