Arrow Help with flash...

So I tried searching for a minute and didn't come up with much, maybe I'm just impatient though. Anyway, I got a flash or speedlight for free from a family member and I can't figure out how to get it to work. I have a Rebel XTi and I know the flash is for a Canon, it is a Promaster FTD7000M. The directions told me to set the flash to the TTL or A-TTL flash modes which I did on the flash, but is there a setting I need to change on my camera? The directions make it sound like all I need to do is connect it to the camera, place the camera on Auto-mode and fire away, but the flash won't go off when taking the picture. The flash works fine and everything (i tested it by pushing the test button on the flash) it just won't go off. I'm sure that this is a completely UN-complicated set up, for some reason I just can't get it. Could someone give me a simple step-by-step? Thanks in advance for the advice/help.

I am not familiar at all with that flash, but you should be able to just hook it up and let it go. Does the flash have a manual mode. Maybe set it manual and give it a try. It probably won't expose right, but use it as a test to find out if triggering is working. Then it might be a signalling problem with TTL.

uhm silly question... but are you in a room that is dark enough for the flash to be needed??? if the camera is on auto and senses that the room is bright enough, the flash won't kick...
