Is this a good price for the Canon T4i?

Been looking for a DSLR lately to add to my current, wonderful Canon G11 to take the next step in photography.

I've been looking at the T4i and Rakuten now has the body + 18-55 lens for $600, and a kit including that lens, 2X telephoto, and HDR lens with a bunch of other junk for $744 CLICK.

Worth it, or just get the body and source the other stuff myself?

Thanks.

EDIT: D'OH! I just read the DSLR FAQ. Forget the link to the kit. $599 from Rakuten is the lowest I've seen for the body; until recently this was the T3i's price. I'm probably going to jump on the body. I am particularly enamored of the articulating screen, which the T3i doesn't have.

That's a good camera Bob. Seems like a good price. The t3i does have the articulating screen, but it's not touch sensitive.

I almost got my girlfriend a t3i until I saw how awesome the t4i is. Touchscreen and 5 frames per second processing made it easy enough to like but the auto focusing is a major win. Instead of having 9 auto focus (AF) points with only the center one actually being a cross type AF sensor. The t4i has all 9 cross type AF sensors. It's an auto focus beast for the price and my girlfriend couldn't be happier. I know Best Buy has a lot of sweet deals with those cameras as I got her an extra lens for like $150 off with the purchase of the camera.

Then again I actually work at Best Buy so take my word with a grain of salt. I have no idea what other deals exist in the world. I get sick of electronics at the end of the day lol

Yeah....it's amazing to me why Canon put this advanced AF system on the t4i but went with the same AF system on the new 6D that is on the t3i.

Btw... what is the advantage of the 7D compared to the t4i?

Sorry for the Bob.

7D is weather sealed, is about as little of a delay when taking pictures as you could really ask for, and processes at 8 frames per second just to name a few advantages. It's basically taking the next step. The rebels are basically the really good cameras for people coming from point and shoots. The 7D and company are when people start getting SUPER serious, which is where my knowledge starts to drift off lol. I use my smart phone for most of my pictures. If I need anything fancy done, I get my lady friend

You will want to make sure that the buy isn't a gray market deal. Make sure it is for the North American Market. If if it is, Canon WILL NOT honor any warranty work if you have to use it.

The only thing I see on that site is this; 1-Year Limited Warranty. If you buy it and you don't get a North American warranty, you roll the dice.

A good point. Rakuten is the former Buy.com, which was a reputable site I've purchased from for years. One would think they would ensure that merch sold was actual NA spec. If not, we'll know shortly. They of course say nothing about this in their ad....

Edit: The images on Rakuten are for the Rebel name, which as far as I know is used only in the US. It's the EOS 650D in the rest of the world. If when it arrives, it's a 650D, then there will be trouble. Or is it harder to spot gray market cameras than that?

One, why did buy.com change their name? I somehow got on a email list and haven't opted out even though I just delete them. I started get a bunch one day from Rakuten and didn't know what the hell it was. I only got like 1 a day MAYBE from buy.com. What exactly does Rakuten mean?

Two, what is an HDR lens?

^^^
I made a typo in my post above. They referred to a "Professional HD 2x telephoto lens" in their kit. Doesn't matter because I'm going to source the stuff in the kit separately so I don't end up with cheap crap.

Camera arrived today. It'll be interesting going to the next step in photography with an SLR. Will be perusing this part of the forum a lot more, that's for sure. You guys have a lot to teach me about taking great photos.

With having iOS, you might be interested in this app. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/came...3473?ls=1&mt=8

I have used it to teach with before. It is basically a camera simulator. You can check out their website, before you make a decision.

Bumping this thread. Thanks for the links, guys.

I am already funding a need to upgrade beyond the 18-55 non-STM kit lens the camera came with. I bought a canon 18-135 IS STM lens as I think it will make a good walking around lens with more reach than the 18-55. Further, on the occasional chance for video, the STM is reportedly quiet enough that the camera's mike doesn't pick it up. I'm willing to put up with a little barrel distortion at 18mm for the price. No pics yet, it's being delivered today.

Next up is a good macro lens for my car photo close ups. Any tips? Or is it really worth using those macro add-ones for regular lenses to start?
