External Flash for Canon Rebel XT
External Flash for Canon Rebel XT
Hey all,
I take alot of interior pics of homes, and after purchasing the Canon EFS 10-22 wide angle lense, I pretty much use it exclusively. The only problem with this lense is the fact that it's large enough in diameter that it blocks the stock flash, and leaves a half moon shaped shadow in my pics. I've been able to work around that by playing with some of the manual settings on the camera, but at times only a flash will do. So I need an external flash.
My question is, what is the difference between these two external flashes? Should I spend the extra $200, or will the lesser expensive one work just fine?
Thanks for any input.

The 430EX should do you just fine, but please order from amazon.com and save yourself about $70.00.

I had the same problem with 10-22mm, I had the 420ex and was given the 580EX.

Word of advice, take a look at some of the recent (and past) talk from here about flash diffusers and bounce cards. Interior room shots are probably one of the areas where they make the most noticeable difference.
Thanks for the input guys. Bill, I'll check out those threads. I want to get better at this. It's important for my work, and I'm starting to do photos for other brokers on the side. Are you saying I should look into the flash diffuser and bounce cards instead of or along w/ the external flash? I'm assuming in addition to.
example of the 10-22 in action
example of lense shadow w/ 10-22 & stock flash

p.s. If anyone is interested in a nice ski retreat at the base of Mt. Hood in Gov. Camp, OR. this one is available. only minutes to 3 great ski resorts and an hour from Portland, OR.

what's your opinion on the 2 flashes? I looked through the hardware thread and I noticed that quite a few people with nice gear have the 430. Seems like it should be good enough for what I want to do w/ it.
For most general use, the 430EX is more than enough. 141 feet @ ISO 100 is pretty good coverage. however, for advanced users like me, I prefer the 580. There are just too many things you can do with multiple speedlites (i have 2) that justify the added cost, plus you can sync with a PC cord the 580 to reposition it somewhere else without the need to buy the ST-E2 wireless transmitter (especially for a one time repositioned use).

^^^ Always look at www.amazon.com or www.b&hphoto.com, save $$$$$. I would have said B&H in th earlier post but the are out of stock. Also amazon.com will ship 99% of their stuff free if you have prime or can wait a few extra days.
no need to get the 580ex as your first flash.
There are a few advantages - faster flash refresh, more efficient flash usage (lens focal length is correctly multiplied out). Nothing to break a sweat about.
I really suggest getting a 430ex first, then coupling that with a 580ex later, if you want to go the multiple flash route.
