DSLR NOOB taking shots of S2K model with D3000

Hey Azine,

I just got a Nikon D3000 kit with 2 lenses, bag, etc.

I'm loving the camera so far, took some shots of my S2K model this morning. I'm sure I'll never take my P&S out again

Any suggestions, comments, advice with this camera? What are some "must have" accessories? So far I just have a tri-pod.

You have a tripod, most don't think it's even needed, you should get a shutter release to use while camera is on t/p. I would also suggest a hotshoe flash if you plan on doing a lot of shooting with flash. A SB400 can be had for about $120 new. And is pretty good w/o going overboard.

Pic's look pretty with the lack of light.

I would also suggest reading somes book, of course I'm going to recommend Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure.

Try using an off-camera flash setup. It creates a more interesting lighting effect.

maybe an ND (neutral density) filter, for those really bright days and a prime lens to get those extra sharp shots (50mm 1.4G would be sweet...but the 1.4D or 1.8D would be just as nice)...

and i second the shutter release remote...i have the wireless one (limitation is it has be in sight of the IR port on the front of the camera as opposed to a wired one attached to the camera) and it works great.

For a cropped body the new 35mm for about $200 would be better than the 50mm. I have heard nothing but good things for the lens.

Looking good man! I'm pretty new to the whole DSLR thing as well.

What are your impressions of the D3000?

Took the dog out to a park today after a fresh snowfall and took some shots. Halfway through I wished I'd taken the other lens, I just had the 18-55 with me

Had to give him a treat for running around in the snow Right before blow drying all the snow off him.

I'm really enjoying this camera, just need to find more time to mess around with it and really learn the features and start getting some programs for image enhancement.

I'm loving the D3000.

My dad has a D40, my sister has a D60. I haven't spent too much time with theirs but Nikon's are in the fam. I find this camera very easy to use - just need to learn everything.

Nice snow pictures! Luckily we haven't had snow here in 2 weeks, I was getting sick of it.

Like you and your D3000, I'm still getting used to the different settings and such with my D60. Practice practice practice

Edit: Oh and I purchased a used Nikon D60 after my last post

Nice! My sister loves her D60, it's been halfway around the world already.

Snow shots tend to come out underexposed, so try exposing them 2/3 of a stop brighter than you normally would.

Actually you should add a full stop, maybe a stop and a half.
