Question Digital Camera... any suggestions?

I finally decided to get a Digital Camera... I think the prices getting to be more reasonable and storage options are now getting to be the mini discs(agfa), cd-r/cd-rw(sony) instead of the more expensive memory sticks of every kind...
I found a Sony Mavica CD200/CD300 that use cd-r/cd-rw which are good for 150+ pictures but they are not yet available... any of you guys have suggestions?

It is a very nice camera and I did look at it before but...
for $800+ you only get a 16MB CompactFlash card with it and you immediately must spend $200 to $500 inorder to get a decent storage space, either a 128MB card or a 1GB microdrive... and I am not prepared to shell out $1000+ for a camera...
I think that a 3 Megapixel camera is an overkill for a casual picture taker, 2 Megapixels is more than enough to get great pictures... I am prepared to spend at most $500...

Don't have any pictures but from reading a lot of reviews it would be fine as long as you set it on 1024x768 at least, anything less than that you'll just end up deleting... you want a nice little camera check out Canon PowerShot S100, the reviews are great... and only $500... with only 12 of Fine 1600x1200 pictures fitting on supplied 8MB card...

A 8mb memory card can hold anywhere from 20-80 pictures(depending on how high resolution the you set the camera to take the pics)...I don't see any reason why you would want more than a 16 or 32 mb card...
RED HOT, My camera is a 1.3 megapixel, so just look at my pics that I usually post..

Check out www.cnet.com ..they have a fairly good selection of camera's that were tested and it shows prices, comparisons, etcetc..

I have the Canon Powershot A50... The Canon Digital Elph S100 is pretty bad-a$$...for the money..
Anything else?

With a regular film camera you can buy film anywhere in case you run out... if you run out of room on your digital camera... guess what... you out of luck...

The least you should do is 1024x768 to get yourself a decent 6"x4" shot... it would probably translate to 20 shots or less... IMO if I'm going to spend over $500 on a digital camera it better take great pictures that at least rivals my SLR...

Here's a pic with from an HP C200, 1 Mega pixle camera, reduced in size by half (1152x872 -> 576x436), and optimized for web (250kb -> 40kb). I have a 20M CF card which can hold 96 pics like the one below. Good beginners camera that works great for posting web pics, but bad for printing anything greater than 5X7 or macro shooting. I've seen this camera selling for ~$100 nowadays.

My camera pop's out 5x7's in small fine resolution mode(640x480) and can take about 65 pictures before I run out of memory..1024x768 holds about half that in fine res mode..I can also reduce the quality of the pic before taking it to free up memory..

Thats pretty good... I thought it'd be closer to 30... how's the battery life, I've read A50 just eats them up...

I made a mistake.. I edited the post...1024x768 is about 30 pics, 640x480 is double...Yes, the A50 eats up the batteries pretty quick...I go thru almost the entire memory before needing a "boost"

Man... I am looking through the reviews and prices and they are unbelievable, I mean the prices... to get a decent camera I'd have to spent at least $400 and to get a decent storage and additional $100... this is rudicolous a good SLR costs about the same or less...

I've had the Canon G-1 for about 4 month's and it's a awesome DigiCamera!
Pro's
3.3 megapixels
type 1 slot (flash card) comes with 16MB
type 2 slot (microdrive) Awesome storage
rechargeable battery
full manual features
flip/rotate LCD monitor

Con's
LCD monitor is to small
Camera is not compact(but that's what I like about it, metal case!)

Grishulia,
The Sony CD200/300 is going to run you atleast $1200 because the last model they had was the same concept but they used a 3" disc and it retailed for $1200.
If your looking for a 3.3MP camera I think that the G-1 has it hands down even though the CoolPix is dam good. I think that you can't beat the storage space it offers. BTW, I've seen CompUSA sell the 360MB MicroDrive for $270(that's not bad) I hold something like 350 pics at 2.1Megapixels.

Just a comment here...my dad has the Nikon Coolpix with 3.34 megapixels and before that had a Toshiba something with 1.3 megapixels I believe. With those resolutions, you cant really tell a difference when lookin at your monitor. The difference is very apparent though when youre printing the pics out with a quality photo printer.

The $1200 was Sony Mavica MVC-CD1000
and I think it more than equals the G1 and comes out to be at least the same price if not less than G1 if you take storage into consideration, 5 cd's cost $20 and 1 can hold 160 of 1600x1200 and 350 of 1024x768...
The new cameras should be about $800-$900 for the CD300 and $600-$700 for the CD200... which is reasonable in the digiworld but stil rudicolously high...

I did look at the G1 and it is very nice and has great reviews, I love the rotating screen and ability to use type 2 cards... but I was also looking at the S100/S300 which has an only drawback, huge drawback IMO, of not being able to use type 2 flashcard... only type 1... major disappointment... 64MB@$100 and 128MB@$200... otherwise it is very sweet, nice and small...

I have the Nikon CoolPix 950. This Camera is awesome I highly recommend it. Canon also makes very good digital Cameras. 8mb memory cards are ok for everyday use but for vacation go with a 32mb or 64mb card. Do a search on cnet.com for digital Cameras they have good info for buying one. Try pricewatch.com to find the best price.

Hey, I came to OT to post this very question. Imagine my disgust to see grishulia, of all people, had already asked it! Hehe, j/k!

I think I'm going to get this camera: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/technets.../fujfin13.html

And from this other place, batteries and a 64mb card: http://www.computers4sure.com/produc...oductid=107008

The total comes out to almost $300 after shipping, but it seems like a really great camera. The only things I don't like about it are: digital zoom only at 640x480, digital zoom is either 1x or 2x (no inbetween), and it is fixed focus. I can't justify spending more than $300 though, and (as I gather from all the reviews I've read, and I've read a lot) this is a great camera in all other respects.

What do you guys think?

I used this site to buy my Olympus D490.
I believe I paid $350.
I think its a great camera. I just use AA Nickel Metal Hydride batteries and charge them.

Hey pricegrabber.com is better than pricewatch.com... it will save me $10 on the camera. Haven't done any competitive shopping on the batteries and 64mb stick yet. Thanks for the link!

On Pricewatch.com go to Electronic the menu on the left then Cameras - Digital & Film menu from that menu go to Digital. Hope that make sense.

I think the Fuji 1300 is the best one out there so far, for the money. Soon as my new credit card comes in I'm getting it, unless someone has a better idea?

Ya, I found a few places that were selling at about $10 less than what I paid... although I'm not sure how reliable their service would be so I went with someone with a good price and reputation.

What camera have you decided on grishulia?

Most likely I'll get a Canon S100($400) and a 64MB($80) Compact Flash to go with it... Canon S300 sounds tempting but has nos come out to the market yet but should be here soon and I don't know if I want to pay $650 for it...

Another one I am looking at is Sony DSC-P1($650) which has very cool options but uses the Memory Stick which is limited to 64MB@$100+... and again Sony CD200 sounds very tempting since it is using the CD-R/CD-RW($5 each) but the price will be $800 and twice the size of the DSC-P1, not even talking about Canon S100...

I basically have decided I don't need more than 2 megapixels and I want a small(tiny) camera but it has to take great pictures... if only the S100 used Type 2 also I would've bought it already but it is limited to Type 1 only...

Desicions.... Desicions.... Desicions....

Cool, cool... I've never had a digi cam before but from the looks of the pics on the site Fiddler posted, I think the Fuji FP 1300 will do me fine. All I want to do is take a few pics of my car and a few other things... got to save money for mods so I have something to take pics of, ya know!

It was a hard decision though... first you look at the $300 camera... wow those are cool features... then you see the $800 camera... hey thats waaayy better... then you see the $1200 camera... damn thats the shit... but I can only spend $300... so you look at the $300 camera again... damn that one sucks now...

Only thing I didn't like about the S100 is the screen in back is smaller, i think, and the movement u see on the screen is delayed(think: webcam), whereas the display on mine flows smoothly, kinda like a camcorder..

I have a 20M CF card which can hold 96 pics like the one below. Good beginners camera that works great for posting web pics, but bad for printing anything greater than 5X7 or macro shooting. I've seen this camera selling for ~$100 nowadays.

Ok dumb question here, I always take my pictures with my camera with 640 x 480, so I don't have to resize for posting on the web.
Thought I took bigger pictures before and resized, but couldn't tell the difference. So I should take my pictures with 2048 x 1536 and resize ?
