D5100 vs T3i?

Im a noob when it comes to photography and never had a dslr but now have the funds for one so was wondering what would be a better buy? I'm open to all suggestions but working on a sub $1000 budget so yeah any feedback regarding what's better would be helpful. Oh to add I love photography you guys have awesome shots I'd be doing this as a hobby so not really looking for anything in particular besides easy to use I suppose.

Thanks guys

You're not really going to go wrong with either camera. What you want to do, is to get into a store get them your hands and see how they feel.

I will say, in my opinion, that Nikon makes better consumer glass (lenses).

what about the Nikon D3200? It's been highly rated... has some pretty cool features (tho, also lacking some others too). But image quality wise... it's suppose to be excellent, not to mention great in high ISOs. Being far below your budget, that will allow you to spend more on better lens(es)

I don't recommend the D3200 over the D5100, too many pixel on the same size sensor.

EkSoni take a look at this, not the best, but puts features out in the open.

Im a Canon bias in that I own a t2i and I love it! Seeing as you are new into the dslr I would recommend the t3i because its really easy to use and the settings on the dials explain what each settings does. And if you are spending about a $1000 you can get the t3i really cheap nowadays and with the extra money save get an additional lens like a stock 50mm one canon makes.

I'm pretty sure every company does...the-explaining-of-the-settings ON the screen now. It's every company's way of getting more people to buy dSLRs

Thanks I actually saw this and this is the reason why I'm unsure of what to get because the 2 people I asked recommended the t3i but this says the d5100.
Thanks everyone.. I honestly am clueless towards dslr's and especially all the lenses and other accessories..

Which would be a bit easier to use?

I had this exact same discussion with another member here (asianspec) about 2 days ago . He recommended the Canon for me mainly because I know people who also use Canon's and can borrow lenses and said it's a bit easier to use (in his opinion).

Too bad they were both sold out by the time I decided. Had a chance to get either the Canon T3i kit or Nikon D5100 kit for around $430 and $480 respectively. Oh well....

I'm now looking at the Canon T4i kit for about $600, but not sure if I want to spend that much right now.

At my old job. Price match + employee discount

Think I'm just going to wait until the T3i is restocked.

To me, I have used both brands. I switched from Canon to Nikon about five years ago. One of the reason, the controls just make more since to me.

I was in the same situation as you before I purchased my D5100 (which is my first DSLR also). I chose the Nikon for a couple of reasons - I felt it was more comfortable to hold than the Canon, the UI was easier to understand and navigate, and the kit I purchased from Costco had a longer zoom. As Jup said, I don't think you will go wrong with either choice. If you have time to wait, maybe you can rent each camera for a day and see how you like using both?

Thanks I guess I'll go this weekend try both out and see which one I get a better deal with. I'm just worried about being able to understand the features.. I technically shouldn't worry I use to be a technical producer at a tv channel and I've used almost every fancy camera they owned but just one of my concerns.

Don't worry about not being able to use the controls. Be worried about using them correctly to get the image you want. With that said, if you buy a dSLR and don't buy this book...

when you ask which is better, most will just say whatever brand they own.

go play with both in store... and decide. they are both companies that make great products.

Not trying to rush you or anything, but RIGHT NOW there are a ton of deals on Canon DSLRs. I see them pop up everywhere on Slickdeals.

Learning to use the camera is a pretty big deal.

And that is a great book.

Slickdeals is good only if you can get the item from a reputable company.

A LOT of companies sell electronic goods in the U.S. but not ALL of them authorized by the company to sell them. So what you get a websites that sell gray market items. So if you have a problem with that item within warranty and with Nikon, even when out of warranty it will not get fixed, because it wasn't to be sold in the North American or U.S. market.

This should be a caution for anyone buying camera equipment in the U.S. I have seen this many times talked about in forums and read about it in trade magazine as well.

B&H does sell gray market items on their website and in their stores (they are clearly marked as such), for cheaper than the authorized U.S./NA version. If you have a problem with on of these items, you have to send it back to B&H to have it fixed under warranty.

All of the deals I've seen are from B&H, Adorama, and Amazon.

A lot of people on SlickDeals are competent. Questionable deals will get voted down while legit deals will get voted up.

That's good to hear, I don't follow slickdeals. I don't need another site putting a gun to my head to get me to buy things.

I'm actually in the same boat as u...

After about a month of research on numerous sites comparing features/specs and many trips to best buy, fry's, etc... to play with many dslr's I finally narrowed it down to the d5100 (body only) and a prime lense. Plenty of great deals out there currently but DAMN...the t4i for $600 is a steal!! ...however, adding a prime lense to the t4i isn't within my current budget. :/

Thanks a lot guys. That t4i looks like a super sweet deal! I was going to buy from PcRichards since I have a connection there and should be able to get a discount or a few accessories for little to no cost. I just want one to play with and eventually learn most if not all the controls obviously would be a practice over time type of thing.

Rick you should try looking into used gear if you're pressing for money. But the thing is, the T4i deals are so good right now that even craigslist has become a rip off place. People are selling their almost new T4i with 18-55 kit for $650-$700, bwaha.

Most like to use a UV to "protect" the front element. They should be using a clear filter for that, if they have to use a filter. IMO, just use the lens hood properly.
