Interesting that Sandisk states that this reader will do CF Type II and Memory Stick Pro Duo but not SDHC. I wonder if perhaps it actually will read them and the unit (and its description) simply came out before SDHC hit the market.

The idea of having 2x4GB is a good one. Too bad no one suggested that earlier.
I will respond to this after I get my new reader. :P

You need to check out the database at RobGalbraith.com: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/no_...?cid=6007-8471

Cards seem to need to be matched to the reader for best performance. If you're primarily using Lexar cards, I'd stick with the Lexar reader. There is a memory controller on the card and one in the reader. If they "talk nicely" to each other, then you'll get the best transfer rates. Also, it seems that firewire is still quite a bit faster than USB, even though the cards shouldn't be coming anywhere near the maximum transfer rate of either interface.

dang.. crazy thing about that chart - the performance of the higher capacity cards goes UP compared to the other capacities, with the faster readers!! ~16mb/sec for the 8gb.

Have you tried the combination on another machine?
It sounds like USB 1.1 speeds. Are you sure USB2.0 is enabled in BIOS and
in windows/whatever? It should not be so slow.

its taking 6 minutes on an older P4 desktop... and I have a correction, this was for 1.72GB. I guess I just assumed it was working OK on the laptop, since I did not get any of those "this device can perform faster" popups... looks like I have to check the USB2.0 software on there, since I did reinstall the OS (reformatted, not using out of box). Thanks Frank, I totally didn't consider that possibility.

A quick trip to Wikipedia answered my own question.
SDHC uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing). SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices.

I just got an Sandisk extreme III 4 GB CF from amazon.
I opened up the box to find not only photo recovery software, but a free license (2 activations) for Capture One LE! Neat.

Also note on the above comment - the bottleneck could have easily been the laptop's hard disk. I can transfer to my laptop MUCH faster now that I got a faster HD for it.

i have the XT and 2 1gig Extreme III

I once filled a card by holding down bust mode. Never did the camera have to wait for the card. everything went flawlessly.
transfering onto the PC takes about 45-50 seconds per cardwith the 12-1 Sandisk Card reader.

plus with the extreme cards you get a pouch and recovery software.

I STRONGLY recomend extreme or up.
