Compact flash card help?

Hey I'm trying to buy a new cf for my rebel xti, I'm not too sure what the specs are for my 2 gb dane elec, but it takes forever when im transfering.

I looked up some info but i want to see what others maybe using.

I'm looking for either a 2 or 4gb fast read atleast... fast write would be nice but does it max out on the rebel xti?

are you transferring from the camera? its much faster if you have a CF card USB reader that you just plug into the computer directly. if you are transferring from the camera to the computer it will take forever.

I am using a card reader, but i'm not sure what card i should get instead, because I think my card is rather slow even through various card readers.

You need to get USB 2.0 reader and make sure your computer is USB 2.0 compatible.

it hasn't been updated for the XTi yet but:
http://robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_p...?cid=6007-7699

Unless you shoot in burst mode fairly often, the only real benefit you'll see is when you're copying the pics to your computer later. Your camera has a fairly good sized buffer and it'll just keep flushing to the card as you take more pics.

A good fast card isn't that much though.

I usually get sandisk ultra IIs since they are fast and relatively cheap.

Definitely not. When you step into the realm of SLRs an Extreme III is not overkill, but I think an Extreme IV would be a bit much.

Keep an eye out for sales, sometimes an Extreme III may be on sale for $49.99 or less. You could also try using a Firewire card reader, which is faster than 2.0.

I bought 2 4GB Ridata CF cards about 6 months ago from Newegg. I think they are 133X.

It looks like Newegg is now only carrying the 150X version for $49 (about the same price I paid for the 133X)

btw Lexar has rebates going on their 2, 4, and 8GB 133x CF cards. You can get em at Adorama - they end 04/30/2007:

4GB
8GB

After looking at the Rob Galbraith link above, I think Im going with 2 4's. The 8 is considerably slower, while the 4 is not much slower than the 2.

Only 1 rebate though, but I'll still save $30 on a 4.

What do you think, is 6.2 MB/sec vs 4.4 MB/sec JPG write speed and 7.2 MB/sec vs 6.0 MB/sec RAW write speed for the 4 vs the 8gb trivial or do you think its important? I dunno.. I think ideally I would like to get the 8GB (and the $70 rebate) but I feel like its too big a performance loss.

I shoulda done some more reading. Looks like I should be ok with any fast card, as the 5D can store 17 RAW or 60 JPG's in the buffer. And, I pretty much never shoot that many in a row and have never seen any buffer errors. Im gonna go with the 8. /thinkingoutloud

How big of a difference is there in the read speeds? You may notice a difference when reading from the card and copying to the computer.

I'm not too concerned about that, as I would be at home, and not in any kind of time-crunch. Sure it will take a long time to transfer 8GB, but still, not too concerned about it. The convenience of not having to switch cards is more meaningful to me than any speed difference in copying them to the computer. btw the 8gb is ~$90 after rebate!

I would rather have 2x4GB than 1x8GB. Your image file sizes are quite a bit larger than mine, but I can easily shoot 300+pics and still have half the card to go.

Even with images that large I still would rather have two cards instead of one cause then you can clear your cards between shoots.

already have two 4gb cards by a non name brand but think I am going to pick up a 4gb or a 2gb lexar card to get some name brand media that is better quality.

I see your points and gave them some consideration - I decided to stick with the 8. I can't clear the cards between swaps because I don't have a computer with me - so that's a non-issue. So there really isn't any advantage (for me) to get 2 4's. Although, I see yours.

^^There is also the issue of failure. Having one as a backup is a necessity - IMHO.

Ah, the good ol' days - I remember paying like $150 for my 1 GB "slow as death" Sandisk CF. Then again, this was almost 5 years ago.

But still, a 2GB upgrade for my laptop is $300. Gotta love stupid Vista, keeping PC RAM prices up.

btw I remember paying $250+ for a 4MB RAM upgrade for my 486SX25 PC...

Just did some timing tests - the Sandisk Ultra II is pretty much as speced: copied off 1931 megs (after formatting & all) of data in 193 seconds - 10 Mb/seconds. Write speed - 249 seconds - 7.54 Meg/seconds. pretty much max write speed for any camera, period.

Ultra III is twice as fast, and the Ultra IV is supposedly 3 times as fast! Whoa.

^Saw that on slickdeals.net. Do the rebates count for when you buy them in a store, or is it only available online from adorama.com?

Im having a DISMAL experience with this Lexar 8GB Wa card. It takes about 40-50 MINUTES to copy over just 1GB of data. I think I need a faster reader. Anyone know whats a really fast reader? I am using a Sandisk 11-in-1. I also tried it directly from the camera and it was a little faster, but not by much. But I would rather do it via a reader. If I could do it over again I would have bought 2 4's. I can't imagine ever filling this thing up and having to copy from it. It would take like, 8 hours. NICE, that's real smart and usable. :banghead:

^^^ You need a USB 2.0 reader. But you have to make sure that your computer is 2.0 capable, which most 2-3 yrs old are. Or you can find a firewire one.

That's pretty rediculous. If it took that long to copy 8GB, I would understand.

The idea of having 2x4GB is a good one. Too bad no one suggested that earlier.
