Choosing the right size for e-mail attachments

I'm a total newb at taking pictures with my own digicam so when I sent someone pictures through an e-mail, the thumbnails seemed fine. But when I enlarged it, the pictures took up my whole screen and then some. My laptop's resolution is set at 1440x900 and even then I had to scroll to see the whole picture in its unshrunken glory.

What can I do to shrink the pictures? Can I just change the setting of picture size from 7 megapixel to something else? But to what? There's 5MP[EZ], 3MP[EZ], 2MP[EZ] and some lower settings I don't think I would wanna use. Wtf is [EZ] anyway?

Is there something else I can use? Adobe? No idea how to use photoshop, I can play with MS Paint though. And should I expect a degrade in quality either way? Lotta questions, thanks to anyone who can answer them...

Maybe next time when I meet some chick online and I send her pictures of my genitals, I can try this trick...

I use irfanview to resize pictures. I usually take my pictures down to 1920x1080 ish for storage and for email I usually do 800x600. Actually, I rarely email pictures because that is a very long/large process and you can never tell what their email limit is. I usually upload to my imageevent or flickr and email the link to the album.

Wait.... that's what I usually do.... upload to an online photo host, then link pictures from it. Thanks.

You were right, I was trying to send one person just 5 pictures but they exceeded the recipient's e-mail size limit. Yahoo users.

Faststone image viewer works great for this use. It's free and makes creating and sizing e-mail attachments disgustingly easy. The resolution won't be quite as good as the original file, but it's great for just shooting pics to friends/family.
