I'm glad I bought mine as well.

I was thinking of getting rid of the 7D for a while, but the AF system is awesome on it.

Tokina has a 10-17mm f/e at about $550

The 11-16 f/2.8 is what I want. It doesn't have to truly be a fisheye - I just like the ultra-wide angle. I love what I've seen of it wide open. UWA AND bokeh? Be-still my heart!!

Peanuts!

It didn't say it here, but the 60D has become a SD card body.

Not any the market yet, so how has someone determine that it is slow?

I don't understand your logic here, or perhaps not understand what you mean by the 7D being a hiccup. There's a lot of good stuff in the 7D over the 50D.

In the past the 'odd' SLRS have been very incremental, and the Evens have had signifigant improvements. The 60D is a big disappointment in that respect, I guess they wanted to expand it into a 4 tier - rebel - 60d - 7d - 1*
with the 5D somewhere in there.

But now that it's been announced, I do think it's a smart thing to do. I've believed for a while now that the **Ds aren't worth the money for most people. But I suspect the 60D will be, since it should be cheaper than the 50D.

I think a lot of the things that matter to existing XXD owners got downgraded in the 60D, but it did add various things that rebel owners would like. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the articulated screen never makes it to the rebel line.

jupitersolo 08-26-2010 12:00 PM

I meant as they did something the customer wanted. The 60D is just a "Super Rebel".

Reall? Thought the t2i could.. :dunno:

dom 08-26-2010 12:44 PM

My worry about this camera is that the rumored D95/D700 specs are true, it absolutely blows the 60D out of the water.

Then again, that would force the price of the 60D down to well below 1K which turns it into a pretty good value. We'll see.

srika 08-26-2010 12:47 PM

Canon is resting on their laurels on that 60D, they have some breathing room, their breakthrough cam (that they needed bad) was the 7D. Nikon's breakthrough cam that they need is the next D90 - mainly because of the video lead Canon has taken. And, Nikon will have to do even more video-wise, they also need D3 and D700 level cams with 1080p video. my 2 cents!

Polycarbonate resin with glass fibre on aluminum chassis
is this a fancy way of saying "plastic"? heh

The thing is, Nikon users (of those two bodies) are not worry about video in their dslr's. It's the camera that people wanted to start with it. And the D3s is more than what thought to get out of a dslr body at this time.

Integrated Speedlight Transmitter is pretty cool... Would be even better if they went to a built in wireless ETTL trigger.

I don't doubt that to be the case, and I would never say the D3 is lacking in anything. Talking more from a "big picture" perspective, I would bet Nikon doesn't enjoy reading about how Hollywood has embraced the 5D2.

Nikon listens to their Pro users, the one's that have been using them for many years, they put out equipment based on this, not what is written about in papers. That's why they have the best FF high ISO bodies.

srika 08-26-2010 01:10 PM

I don't doubt that to be the case. Now tell me why they would *EVER* put video into a D3? Even a couple of years ago people would have thought this would NEVER happen.

Video is coming (it's here), but it's not the rush that Canon has put into it. It's not like people are not going to buy their bodies because it isn't there. They can't keep the D3s on the shelf, because of it's high ISO and IQ, not because it offers video.

I know it has 720p video already, my question is, why did they put it in the D3, if the users didn't care for it.

Not that it isn't cared for, not a priority. They are not freaking out that Hollywood isn't using their bodies. Nikon is a camera company, Canon is a consumer electronics company, two different mindsets.

Not going to happen here, we know it's about the person behind the viewfinder.

So let me get this straight... The 60D has the same sensor and LCD as the Rebel, plastic body, no AF improvement, and less FPS than the 50D. DPR says "It's a model that sits half-way between the two, without coming too close to either.", but to me it comes way too close to the Rebel.

I've taken a closer look at it.
It's still definitely closer to the 50D than the Rebel.

Rebelish: Sensor, Body
no high speed shutter sync (??!?)
Video (is this improved? not sure)
halfway: fps (5.3 vs 3.7 (rebel)/6.3 (50d)
Lost a couple of the dual functions on the buttons, but it's still
closer ergonomically to the 50D. (top LCD, two dials, etc etc)
50dish: AF grid.
Still has the joystick, but it's a dialpad within the back wheel.

improvements over 50D
Articulated LCD (it's higher res than either 50d/t2i)
wireless flash built in
1 directional level
Viewfinder (a bit)

So it's halfway between the rebel and the 7d. It's kind of worse than the 50D i guess, but it's a give some, get some.

I think the most annoying for me would be the drop to 5.3 fps,
and losing the dual function drive/AF button.

You know, my D60 back in the day had a plastic body, and I didn't mind it at all. I suppose back then I wasn't constantly walking around with the 200 2.8 hanging off my neck, but I would think that if the mount/front plate are metal, that should be sufficient.

- Frank

einsatz 08-26-2010 08:48 PM

I dunno - everything you list under "rebelish" is everything that matters. The improvements over the 50D don't really have an impact over the quality of photos it would take over the 50D. IMO, that makes it definitely more of a Super-rebel like someone else said than anything.

JLai 08-26-2010 10:09 PM

I'll be sticking to my 7D.

60D is big time fail IMO (no magnesium alloy body, articulating screen, SD card, loss of independent joystick (instead, integrated into the wheel), etc.)

The 70-300L IS is interesting. I would be more interested had it been constant f/4.0. I've come to despise variable aperture. Pretty sure the 70-200L IS f/4.0 will be the next lens to replace my 70-300 IS.
