Canon Error 99

Hey guys, I have a bit of a weird problem here. This would seem like a simple Google search but it's too specific for it.

Any ways, my father in law is using a Canon 17-85. Every time we shoot it at 17mm in auto mode, it gives us an Error 99. This only happens from 17-24. After 24mm, there is no error. Also, there is no error in manual mode (from 17-85). We have tested the lens on both a Canon Xt and Xti, same issue.

Now it seems like the obvious problem is the lens. So what else can I do to try and fix this error before we bring it into service?

Theres nothing you can do. The electronics of the lens seem to be having issues. Send it in.
