Just a little of my living room & my cat. The slo-mo playback is really cool!

I'm going out to the Waterford Fair today - super cute little village - so I'll get to play with more than my 4 walls. I got my 50mm micro-adjusted last night, and set up a few of the custom functions. I won't likely be seeing anything today that challenges the AF system, but I'll go shoot some horses soon. I'll shoot some horse video, too - that could be fun.

I will say, regarding the AF - I was playing with the focus on my 50mm in supremely crummy light last night (1 dim lamp & a television in a large room w/ a vaulted ceiling), and, while it hunted occasionally if I really chose crappy targets, it performed very well. I'm a happy camper, so far!

I didn't get much chance to play with mine yesterday except for a few minutes in the office. This was the first camera I had with Live View - it was a lot slower than I imagined. Definitely not something I would use on anything other than stationary targets with a tripod. I still need to finish reading the manual to find out if you have the option of any other focus points in Live View other than center.

I do love the LCD over the 30D. Getting used to changing the focus methods, but not sure I like having to use both the wheel and the joystick to pick an individual point. Used to using just the wheel.

Tried a little video and think that IS will be almost required if shooting hand held, especially on longer focal lengths.

That's it for now. Hopefully get to really take some shots later this afternoon.

Is the micro-adjust pretty easy to do?

Moe, I think you'll find Live View is very good for things like macro shooting, or other shooting with static subjects. The way you can really dial in the focus is pretty amazing. It's not an on-the-fly feature, but it has its uses.

Moe, you can change how you select the af point from either both joystick and wheel, to only the wheel or only the joystick.

Also in live view you can change where the white box is for AF, by using the joystick. (not sure on using the wheel)

Yes, and I got to test out my adjustments today - VERY nice! I won't be able to process & post pics today, because I'm about to leave again, but I'll try to get some up Monday. Going out to play again tomorrow.

I'm curious how loud IS would be as video noise. Probably not much, but it comes to mind.
On my Pentax W60, the continous AF sounds like a freakin' woodpecker. It's brutal.

i would imagine the mic would pick up some of the vibration from the IS motors running.

but generally on all the IS lenses ive owned, its really quiet makes a very quiet whirling noise. and makes the most noise when starting and stoping.

I think an external mic would be my first addition to that cam if I was shooting a lot of video.

I think you would need the external mic. I was using the 17-55 while playing and the internal mic picked up some noise from the zoom mechanism. I doubt you'd get any with L's but the 17-55 isn't really a silent zoomer.

So does anyone know if there's a replacement for the 50D coming up? Because I wouldn't mind upgrading from the xsi to something with better performance and a more advanced AF system. I feel like I keep running into limitations with the xsi, but a 7D is a little out of my budget right now.

There's speculation that there will be a 60D, but no official word from Canon yet. The 7D would slot in between it and the 5D MkII.

FYI:

=========

Lightroom 2.5 and Camera Raw 5.5 include rough preliminary support for the Canon 7D, G11 and S90. They are not listed as supported because they are quite far from final quality. We hope to finalize support for those cameras in our next update.

Regards,
Tom Hogarty
Lightroom, Camera Raw, DNG Product Manager
Adobe Systems

========

From what I'm reading 'quite far from final quality' means they look pretty bad. Wish we had DNG support in cameras.

I now remember, the most annoying part about getting the 40D early was waiting for Lightroom to support it.

Here are a few pics from my first day out with it:

Waterford Fair..

I don't think they look terrible at all, but I do hope that one of the improvements to 5.5 will be the highlight recovery tool. It worked, but not as well as it seems that it typically does, on some fairly standard exposures. We'll see.

Lol, no they don't look terrible, they look great. I take your initial impressions of the camera are good?

Yes, I'm in love! I will say that every single lens I've used so far has needed microadjustment, so I'll be testing/adjusting the rest of them before I shoot anything important. Apparently it's calibrated quite differently from my 40D. Then again, when you're shooting at f/1.6 or using a macro lens, it's going to be pretty apparent!

More pics on the way from yesterday...

Nice pics wndrlst. At this resolution you can't really tell if there is any issue with ACR.

I was talking to a friend who also just got the 7D and he was really disappointed when he opened up his files in LR. He was seeing quite a bit of noise even at ISO 100 and was ready to pack the camera up and return it. After opening the files in DPP, it was night and day difference. I'm sure that the ACR update will be a noticible improvement.

I barely even had time to play with the camera this weekend. Just looked through the menus a bit and did a little reading.

hmm maybe that was the issue with the early files where they looked noisy (?)

Yes, at 100% I'm not seeing the detail I'd like at higher ISO's, and will definitely reprocess after then next update comes out. I've read that DPP looks a lot better when pixel peeping. I've also read the files are smaller.

To be honest, it was such a long process to get everything loaded & updated with CS4 that I haven't had the patience to install the latest DPP yet. Do you know how much smaller the files are, or how that affects things? These are so enormous, anyway that perhaps a smaller file size would be better.

Here's a sample 100% grab at ISO 1250 before any sharpening. (Sharpening is also turned off in-camera.)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/moxiephotos/3983667245/" title="7d.jpg by MoxiePhotos, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3431/3983667245_bb343ff412_o.jpg" width="750" height="500" alt="7d.jpg" /></a>

As a comparison, here is the whole shot (actually cropped slightly, but the portion of the shot I chose to use, so a real world application) at normal viewing size, and more what I'd expect a print to look like unless blown up HUGE. (Dan Martin correct me if I'm wrong!)

100mm f/2.8 macro. I guess I should specify classic now that there's an L version?

I love this lens. The IS is an exciting development in the new L version, but this lens rocks, as is, at a much lower price. Probably the the best bang for the buck in my kit, since I bought it used. I use it a lot, lot, lot.

You'll love it! They've been hard to find lately, but hopefully with the release of the L version, used copies will hit the market.

those shots look pretty nice, and they will only get better after the LR update.

Can't wait to get my hands on this camera. The wifey needs a friendly 30th bday gift idea reminder.
