On the flip side, there's Rob Galbraith's article which (IMO) pretty much hammers the Mk III's autofocus preformace for a camera in it's class.

Actually the one I posted alludes to focusing problems too - when the batter is running towards the camera, a few shots were (surprisingly) out of focus. These seem like pretty big issues! I mean, not like, nitpicking.

Damn that RG article is pretty nice. I love the samples they put up where you can go through the frames and see the AF light thing. Looks like IIN owners are gonna be pretty happy! This is really disappointing!

On the plus side I sure feel fine for having a 30D, but is it just me or can you barely tell some of the RG shots are out of focus?

I shoot ALMS and Speed World Challenge races with my 30D and you'd be thrilled if everyshot looked like some of those RG shots for the cars. Heck if I can pan and read the decals on the cars that's like woo hoo! I mean like 1 out of 10 shots is usualable in many cases for Autoracing.

AF is also only a firmware upgrade away from improvement....

the original 1D had some issues that were fixed with an update shortly after release...

It seems that not even a firmware upgrade is required to fix the problem:

When I first shot with my new Mark III and the 500 F4, I experienced the AF problem. You could have called my BIFs "Blurs in Flight."
The fact that my one shot stills were somewhat soft brought me, with Canon tech input, to try the AF Microadjustment -- C.Fn. lll-7.
I did a meticulous AF adjustment drill, one-shots, tripod mounted, at a distant sign with a busy background.
I ended up adjusting the lens setting to -19, after testing across the entire adjustment spectrum.
This resulted in a dramatic increase in the still-shot sharpness of my images.
Reasoning that AF won't work well if the camera can't first focus sharply, I then did a series of test bursts with approaching cars along a highway, and all images were sharply in-focus.
At least in my case, this has completely resolved any focus issues with my Mark III.
My BIFs and now really 'birds,' and the image quality is fantastic.
-Bill
That would certainly explain why some sports shooters have not had any issues with bursts in AI-Servo while others found it completely unusable. The new dual processor AF system is much more sensitive than the system in the previous 1 series bodies, so if the lens is not calibrated to the body, it would hunt a lot more than necessary.

If the AF microadjustment is indeed the fix, then I personally think Canon should offer this service for free via trained people at authorized dealers.

EOS-1D Mark III Firmware Update Version 1.1.0 is available.

It includes the following improvements and fixes:

1. Improves the look of images when played back on the LCD monitor.

Applies a slightly stronger sharpness setting to the LCD monitor when images are played back.
2. Countermeasures for Main Dial response errors (Main, Quick Control, Vertical-grip Main).

Fixes a rare response error in the Main Dials in which they either did not respond when rotated or would change several clicks' worth even if only clicked once.
3. Reduces the tendency to autofocus on the background instead of the main subject when shooting in AI Servo AF under certain conditions.

Reduces the tendency of the camera to autofocus on high-contrast backgrounds when shooting in conditions where AF detection is difficult, such as when the main subject is not completely covered by the AF frames or if the main subject's contrast is low.
4. Corrects errors in the Italian and Simplified Chinese menu screens.

5. Fixes a rare phenomenon in which the camera cannot start normally when the battery is inserted.

Fixes a rare phenomenon in which the camera cannot start normally when the battery is inserted, such as after replacing the battery. This phenomenon sometimes occurred with the version 1.0.9 firmware when the battery was inserted into the camera due to the camera's communication timing. The occurrences were extremely rare, and abnormal operation could be fixed by reloading the battery.
The version 1.1.0 firmware incorporates countermeasures for this phenomenon.

* The improvements and fixes described in 1 through 4 above are incorporated into the version 1.0.9 firmware. The version 1.1.0 firmware includes all of those and also incorporates the fix described above in 5.

FWIW Galbraith claims...

...The firmware update includes the changes of firmware v1.0.9, announced in a Canon USA statement earlier this month, plus one more: a correction for an anomaly whereby the camera won't power up after a battery is inserted, requiring the battery to be removed and reinserted.

I just updated the firmware on mine... will do some test shot this weekend and see if the AF is better. I did not have that issue with firmware 1.0.9 (it came with that version).

wow man, didnt realize how crazy 10fps is until you watch this video, its the mkIII at 10fps, and the pictures put together as a movie

also shows a view thru the viewfinder at 10fps, and how fast the buffer fills up.
(there is no sound until they show you the view thru the viewfinder)

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/a8XD6F7M45k"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/a8XD6F7M45k" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

and this is nifty
3 MKIIIs used to capture barry bonds breaking the record at 30fps

You're picking up someone's member?

I was at a wedding on Sunday and the photographer had some nice gear. Pretty sure it was a 1Ds markIII, but might have been a 1D. Couldnt steal it from him to get a closer look, though.

Agreed! Would you believe he hadn't actually released the shutter until today at lunch?? Freaky. And he still hasn't posted it in the new toys thread. That 10 fps is sexy, though!

I wanted to use it today, but of course it finally started to rain today. And will continue for the next 3-4 days.

So, you skipped the 5D and went straight for the Big Boy, eh? Atta kid. This makes my 40D purchase look somewhat pathetic. Lol!
