My thoughts:

I really think you should just get the 28-135 and run with it.

Lens choice is best based on shooting style.
If you'll notice, responses are straying towards: 'This feature is useful for shooting _____'.
Do you want that? is that worth X dollars to you?

The value of IS will be determined by how steady you shoot.
The value of brighter (Smaller F stop lenses) is determined by how badly you want
shorter shutter speeds and faster autofocus. (brighter = faster).

Just get a mid range zoom lens and run with it. Shoot for a while.
After a few trips, you'll get a handle on your style, and what lenses you need to cater to that style.

What you should also think about is how many lenses are you willing to carry with
you when you shoot. I found I really didn't want to carry more than 3 lenses,
and that affected my final lens choices. Having more lenses don't help if they
sit at home.

I have a 40D and on average, RAW files are about 11 meg each. So you can expect
about 350 shots on a 4 gig card. I carry 7 Gig ( due to buying more memory: 1 + 2 + 4),
and offload each night. But I shoot like a maniac, and refuse to delete in the field.

I think III is good enough. I have like 12 gigs of II but I only have an XT.
and don't buy sandisks off ebay. I've heard a lot of people buying fakes.

There have been some stories of a lot of fake CF's on ebay. Luckily my first Kingston 2GB CF wasn't a fake. Still running strong since last year.

The IV's are so much more expensive....I think I might go with 2 4GB cards (SanDisk III)

$49 at Circuit City

Extreme III you can write/read at 20MB/sec
Extreme IV at 40 MB/sec.

the 40D can only write at ~ 10 MB/second, so IV is a questionable use of money.

However, for professionals, it is useful since they can copy pictures off the card at high speed. I would get IIIs, personally. Sometimes I use my CF cards as big flash drives.

some of the newer EXTREME IIIs claim 30MB/sec. The 8gb card I just got does...but when I look at amazon or others they say 20MB/sec

fawking confusing. But I do notice the difference over my Ultra II card....Instead of clicklclickclick...stop....

its just clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick clickclickclickclickclickclickclickclick

MY III is very fast 3fps, fast. And if you get the high speed reader copying it to your HD is a painless process.

The new one's read at 30. http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDCFX3...ref=pd_sbs_e_3

Agree, the speed is how fast to get it to your computer, a firewire 800 is the fastest.

Does anyone have any thoughts on buying a 40d from an ebay vendor? There are some reputable vendors with 1000k+ positive feedback, selling the 40d with some other goodies for only 850ish or so and free shipping....

General consensus on here is to avoid ebay at all costs. Go with a reputable seller like BH photo.

If it sounds too good to be true....

How is their customer service if the camera arrives DOA? Is it US or gray market? Are they authorized dealers so that if the camera breaks in three months, Canon will service it?

I think I would stick to amazon, etc...

Get it from a STORE, you most likely are getting Grey Market item from ebay, warranty won't work in US.

Go with B&H or Adorama, synth. You'll sleep better. You'll save on tax and their customer service is excellent.

And refund the difference if the price drops in those 30 days. I took them up on it on a TV I bought from them, and it was effortless.

Just ordered the following as well:

-Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
-Canon EOS 40D Guide to Digital Photography

I'm going to hold off on a more expensive lens until I get a better feel and understanding of the camera. Couldn't beat the price on the EF 50mm lens as a starter...
