if you are getting the 40d, didn't the rebates just end?

I think prices went back up $200 over the weekend. Or were you looking to buy used/refurbished anyways?

ps. that is a pretty nice collection to borrow from. Nothing I would consider ultra-wide though on a 1.6 crop, so maybe look at the 10-22, and maybe get the kit w/ the 28-135, and that would be a decent kit for yourself when you can't be borrowing an L from your friend

As I said yesterday, and just checked this morning Amazon.com still has it for $938. If someone wants to get it better hurry.

Body only... I'm debating on this and picking up a lens. Question is, best "bang for the buck" standard type lens that is better then the "kit lens" but not too much more pricier if I bought the "kit lens" separately. I'm willing to go a few hundred more then the kit lens....

I came to the 40D from the 20D, and in my experience the 20D has better higher ISO performance than the 40D. The 40D is good, but noisier than the 20D at all ISO's. Since the 20D & 30D use the same sensor , I'd expect their performance to be near the same. Some other things are better about the 40D, like frame rate and auto focus (for the most part), but others are not, such as the placement of the buttons along the bottom of the LCD and overall LCD quality. Also, Canon really needs to upgrade to Nikon-quality LCD's the next time around. The 40D screen is big, but IQ is relatively poor, IMO. It can be tough to determine critical sharpness with it.

Maybe it's just my perception, but that's what I've seen.

Get the body and the 50mm 1.8 II lens. It will get you started and it's a good lens. This will allow you to figure out which way to go for lenses.

Yeah, it's crap. It's the same resolution as the 20D/30D, but much larger.
AND they still insist on using the tiny embedded jpeg during picture review, which is
useless for checking sharpness. It's my biggest dissapointment of the camera,
but it's the same for all the X0D cameras.

How about this: I have an unused 28-135 sitting on my shelf.
I have since relaced it with the 24-70/ 70-200 combination.

You can have it for a fair price. It has no box, but a UV filter.

Once you try a L lens, it is going to be very difficult to not buy a L lens.

I'm curious what the EXIF was, I'll get it later..

this lens is not "required" for night photog.. as long as you have a tripod you can get similar results with other lenses.

Thanks guys for all the tips and advice. I think getting the body with 50mm is a brilliant plan. My buddy is allowing me to borrow some of his lens', so that might be the way to go! Then, I can figure out what I REALLY want rather then speculating now and pulling the 'trigger'

Synth, just a thought from someone who bought the 40D with the kit lens:

The kit lens sells alone for $400, and used in good condition for $325. I think it is a great starter lens, as it gives some reach and some wide, plus you can get it as a kit for $75 less than the retail for the lens. I also like having an IS lens to play with, since it really helps (even thought the 28-135 doesn't have the best IS Canon makes).

I think that for the price of the lens in the kit, it is a great lens to start out with. If you find you need longer, get a 70-200. If you find you need wider, get a 10-22. If you find the IQ of the lens lacking, sell it for what you paid for it and get the 17-55 or the 17-40 or the 24-70.

That's not bad advice either.

Price of Kit: $1,259
Price of body only: $938.00
---------------------------------
Difference of $321.00

Then if I don't like the lens, I can sell it & break even? I guess that is cool, but shipping/listing/etc. is a major PIA for me. I figure I should get that 50mm, practice with some of my buddies lens' and get a better lens when I am ready. After some experience and practice time, I think I would rather get two nice lens (all around and wide) and call it a day.

One friend recommended the 24-105 and the 17-40 L lenses, but it was quickly refuted by my other friend with the above collection. He said they are great lenses for daytime but f/4 will limit low light handheld shots. He had both and sold them to upgrade to the "faster" 16-35 and 24-70 f/2.8 lenses. Although much heavier, he said he couldn't be happier with their ability to absorb available light where the previous ones failed miserably.

Oh, and of course the 16-35 and 24-70 f/2.8 lenses are like DOUBLE the price of the 24-105 and the 17-40 L lenses! Do you guys agree about what he said?

Just get the body $938 before it goes back up (the rebate should have ended Sunday, everbody else has raised their prices to $1150), and get the 50mm 1.8 II $85 to get going.

You can worry about the rest later, unless you have an extra $1000 for the 24-105.
