Best point & shoot digital for under $300???

I bought myself an HP Photosmart R707 last year for Christmas, and lost it on my last girls only shopping trip in November. I'm going on vacation soon (like leaving this Sunday) and need to pick up a digital before I leave, or on my way. So, what do you all suggest for a digital point & shoot that I can pick up at Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. for $250 - $300?

I'm a little partial to Nikon, but not really sure why, and prefer to have a nice Optical Zoom on it.

Any suggestions?

OK, so I've been reading the DPReviews, and while I'd love to have the 10x or 12x Optical Zoom of the Kodaks, they really don't get great reviews. So this is what I've narrowed down to:

Sony Cybershot, either the DSC-W7 or the DSC-P200 or;

Canon Powershot A450, A620 or A700.

I will be using this mostly on auto modes, for mostly outdoor shots, and while I'm quite a picture whore (I go nowhere without my camera), I'm still really quite a novice and don't have the time yet to learn all the intricacies involved in taking a GREAT photo.

So, based on that information, does anyone have any personal preferences of the cameras I've listed?

I would have to say the new Canon SD600, announced 2/21/06. It retails for $349, and is currently going for as low as $309 at Newegg.

BUT... keep an eye out for it at Slickdeals and Techbargains... Dell runs a 20% off deal rather frequently that can be applied to it... bringing the price down to $270. This is precisely what I'm doing right now myself. If you see this deal out there, let me know!

HP cameras Bad idea. My neighbour bought a $250 HP (can't remeber the model) After owning it for a month she asked me to help figure out why the pics were terrible. She now owns an SD400 and has no complaints.

GO Canon, Sony or Nikon.

Going on the advice and reviews on www.digitalcamera-hq.com, I today ordered the Sony Cybershot DSC-W7. Got it for $270.44, which inlcudes 2nd day air shipping, from www.easttrades.com

Thanks everyone for your advice, and will post pictures next week that I took with the camera. I'm going to Boston to visit family and will be getting my windows tinted on my new '06 Royal Blue Pearl TSX, and will also be taking in some of the Boston Marathon. Hopefuly I'll have some post-worthy pictures.
