Alaskan Cruise-June 2013

Just took my family (new wife and daughter) on a 7 day Alaskan Cruise on Royal Caribbean. We started in Seattle and cruised to Juneau, Skagway and then to Victoria (island). Then back to Seattle.

My daughter said it best....she said, "it was like living in National Geographic for a week!"

Here are some of the pictures I took. I'm not a good photog, but I try hard. These shots are unedited and unretouched. Some turned out really good and others.......

Here was our home for the week....

First stop: Juneau, Alaska! We went whale watching in Juneau (our first stop).

On the way back, we saw two bald eagles sitting on one of the markers (coming back to port)....

Day two: Skagway, Alaska! We went to the Yukon on a train (hour and a half ride).

Downtown Skagway......what a backdrop!

Before we left for Victoria, we went to Tracy Arm Fjord and got VERY close to Dawes Glacier (approximately 100 feet). They have never gotten that close before. This is a 10,000 year old glacier!

We also had to dodge a few of these on the way to the glacier too....

Final stop was Victoria (Victoria Island), across from Vancouver, BC. This city is similar to San Diego. It has the best overall weather in Canada! It never freezes there-they have flowers year-round!

It was crazy because there was daylight until almost midnight every night in Alaska. Then the sun came up around 4am.....crazy.

Fantastic pictures Steven! Most vacation pictures are so blah and on iPhones, but these came out great! That train track bridge is just wild...

Ha! We were a day behind you on the Star Princess. All my pics are the same as yours LOL. We went whale watching in Juneau, we did the train in Skagway and took a float plane tour of Misty Fjords in Ketchikan.

That looks to be the same trip we went on about 5 years ago. It was great! I would go again. That Glacier has definitely shrunk (melted) a bit since we went.

Yeah it has. Here's a (terrible) picture I took of it in 2004:

Guys, I have a question for you.

Every time I use my camera, I get reinvigorated about photography. I was frustrated using this Canon T4i on my trip because I have a Sigma 28-300mm lens for it. When I push the button half way down to focus, it doesn't seem like it gets a sharp focus all the time.

Is it the camera or the lens not being as compatible with a Canon camera? I was actually considering selling the T4i and moving up to a full framed Canon camera body.

Will I see a lot of difference if I do move up?

Me thinks you should jump ship and get a Nikon haha.

Nice photos Steven. I just listened to my uncle tell us about his Alaska trip. His photos are very similar to yours. He said there are a lot of waterfalls and saw about 15 bald eagles in one spot. And bears.

Steven, sounds like a problem with the lens.

Your T4i has 9 auto focus cross-points (same as mine) and it should allow it to focus quickly.

Thanks guys.

Well, I decided to step up my game. The Alaskan Cruise has me bitten by another bug. I've been shooting with a Sigma 28-300 Zoom lens on my Canon T4i. It's a good lens because of it's versatility. But I have focusing issues with it....

Today I ordered a used Canon 100mm lens as well as a Canon 10-22mm lens. I'm hoping they show up on Wednesday. I'm look forward to trying Canon glass.

I've started working with the 100mm, I'll experiment with the 10-22mm over the weekend.

Azine search FTW. Nice pics Steven.

Trying to book a trip. Have never really been attracted to cruise ships, but the wifey wants to take her mom on a nice Alaskan cruise before the end of summer. Hiked through Denali many moons ago when I went to visit my cousin who was serving in the Air Force. Beautiful country is an understatement.

Honestly, cruises are the best value for the vacation dollar. Everyone always says that Alaskan Cruises are great.....they lied-they're fantastic! You won't be sorry-I promise you.

+1 for cruises....My last trip was also back in July 2014, also to Alaska via Seattle. One of the best trip's I've EVER went on.
