About to order my new camera! Please Help!

So, I'm thinking of getting a new set of camera.

First, I had Canon xti for 3 years with stock lens.

I found this deal at B&H. Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm Lens @ $1,129.95

I guess I won't be paying taxes and will just have to pay shipping fee for this.

Is this a good buy? I don't want to spend too much on it as I want to add some more goodies on my car.

Any other recommendation?

Thanks in advance you guys.

Do you still have the xti? What are you missing that makes you want a new camera?

You might consider either keeping your xti or getting a gently used 40D or 50D and getting a better lens.

and FWIW, you either choose to spend money on your car or camera. Unless you have unlimited funds, it's difficult to do both well.

That's a pretty good deal. A local guy is selling the body for $825 here.

Bad choice, if the xti isn't holding you back, get a lens while you have the money to do so. Camera bodies come and go, best to get GOOD glass when you have the money.

Having the newest body has more of a factor, but any series photog will recognize a nice lens over the body.

+1 on investing on good glass. Build up a nice collection that will last you a while and then you can upgrade the body as needed.

I agree, get new glass.

However, I upgraded from an xti to a 7d last month and I am amazed by the image quality I'm getting with the 7d. It doesn't compare to the xti.

^ this is what i heard too. xti to 50d will give you much better images with using same lens, no?

i doubt i will upgrade my body again to something else in next 5-7 years.

Is it that bad of a decision to get 50d right now? I can get a 50d with its stock lens for about 1100 bucks and sell my xti for some money. then I can probably start collecting lenses slowly. right?

Since you shoot mostly cars...my suggetion would be to get a wide angle...the
10-22 can be had for $600 or less(used) and the 17-55 IS can be had for $900..a little more or less(used)...you would be set with that for a while..and if you feel you need more reach...the 70-200L f/4 can be had for around $500(used)

+1 one on the 10-22, I had full frame on the brain.

Though a Tokina 11-16 is another way to go.

The Tokina gives it a good run for the money, it's about $100 cheaper and it's 2.8

On a side note...there's someone on POTN selling a used 40D body with less than 8k clicks for $600...you can get that and look around for a 10-22...

yup, I already have plenty of glass.

So, using the same glass with the xti as well as the 7d is a major difference in IQ.

17-40
70-200
10-22
100mm

so to the op, if you are not planning on upgrading the body for the next 5-7 years, maybe getting a new body is not a bad idea. However, if you are not going to use all the features the new body will offer, then there is no use for getting it.

I really don't think he needs the new body if hes just shooting his car. He can work with alot of the conditions with an xti it still produce great results.

The 7d is like the d300, higher fps for sports quicker af and low light for indoors. If hes not looking to jump into that quickly lenses will do him fine.

Thanks for the good advice guys.

It looks like I'm getting that combo from B&H.

Canon EOS 50D SLR Digital Camera Kit with Canon 28-135mm Lens @ $1,129.95 no tax + free shipping

It's actually my bday this saturday and my 2 best friends and gf are giving me $200 each on this purchase as a bday gift.

I won't be getting a new camera body for next 5-7 years for sure. I'll probably start collecting some lenses you guys have mentioned above.

So, I should look for 10-22mm as my next lenses right? Since it is good for taking car shots, right?

Thanks guys.

Fixed.

I'm sure you will enjoy the new combo, but still think you should have just gotten the glass.

Look at the Tokina as well, you'll save some money and get a faster lens.

No really, I totally understand what you guys are saying. And its not like I woke up in the morning yesterday and like "hmm i should upgrade my camera body." I thought about this for pretty long time actually. I saved up some budget aside for the past 6 months just for this. I do

Will you at least look at your current lens and tell us what it is? I'd hate to see you get another of the same lens.
