Photographer Olivier Grunewald has recently made several trips into the sulfur mine in the crater of the Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java, Indonesia, bringing with him equipment to capture surreal images lit by moonlight, torches, and the blue flames of burning molten sulfur. Covered last year in the Big Picture (in daylight), the miners of the 2,600 meter tall (8,660ft) Kawah Ijen volcano trek up to the crater, then down to the shore of a 200-meter-deep crater lake of sulfuric acid, where they retrieve heavy chunks of pure sulfur to carry back to a weighing station. Mr. Grunewald has been kind enough to share with us the following other-worldly photos of these men as they do their hazardous work under the light of the moon. (30 photos total)

At first I didn't like it. It jumped around too much. But then I started getting hooked on it.

And... My wife is a bad influence on me... I saw the boots and quietly muttered "hot shoes!" before I realized how wrong that was.

loved the video, it laughs in the face of all the idiot anal f*cktards (who have no clue about art) who think that blurry automatically means bad.

bent pin in the 7D memory card slot cards won't go in all the way. I've tried computer tools to fix - no luck its too tight a space. Just my luck, I've been using CF cards in cameras for 10 years now and this is the first time I've had any trouble like this, and its right before I travel

I did a few shots like that with the invisible screen once for a photo class... it wasn't nearly as rewarding as I thought it'd be.

also here is commentary on that particular photo:

How do you take a manly wildflower photo? Hit the shutter once you're laying on your stomach and a Mojave Green pops up out of the bed of flowers and scares the crap out of you! This was my first rattle snake sighting besides seeing them cross the road all the time while driving in the desert! Luckily I shot in burst mode the moment I saw it and a few more frames after I jumped back. I didn't know they were so mean and puff up to make themselves look bigger.

I get the hardest time from some of my good non photographer friends because I'm shooting wildflowers here and there so I'll have to show them this one.
