Tinted Taillights are illegal in California CVC 24252
hi all, haven't been on for a while. just wanted to share this with you. i was pulled over this morning by CHP. gave me a ticket because of my tinted taillights. he said it's illegal based on CVC 24252. it's a fix it ticket and told me that simple green would help remove it.
he asked why i had it and if i didn't like the original ones. i told him that when i first got it 6 years ago, hardly anyone had them and i like being different. he replied that everyone is doing it now . so why haven't i heard so many people getting fix its for them?
i also told him i was pulled over a couple weeks ago for a different reason and was never told anything about my taillights. he had no response.
i've noticed that law enforcements have been pulling over more people than usual for a couple of months now and i think it has something to do with the budget and how it affects them. he said it'll cost $20 court fee for a fix it ticket??? geez. just be extra careful out there.
does anyone have suggestions on how to remove the 3M tint. i bought it here a few years ago from one of the vendors - rockblocker.

here are pics i took when i installed them back in 2005.
comparison with and without
here are night time shots. this is with lights on but without pressing on the brake.
this is with lights on and pressing on brake
i don't have anything more recent but they look just like they did when i installed them.

Looks murdered-out to me from the pictures and I'm not surprised you got a ticket. I see those quite a bit and the light output with those is a joke. That is probably not the case with the TL's LED tails but to a cop a taillight is a taillight. Sorry you got the ticket but if you get them redone I would go for smoked. They still look tight and cops are less likelly to harass you. I've had my tails smoked for almost a year and a half and never had issues with cops. But then again you're in CA so you get raped either way lol.

tint the taillights on the inside & you wont get hassled. Just dremel them open & tint the inside lenses..... Then you get a truly unique look. Most people wont go that far so they stick with the "now" gheto "back then then" cool look (cool when you first got them).
If you dont want to do them yourself, pay the guy thats doin them on the 3g forum. I did mine myself.
These are not mine, I think this is MrLunacy's ride.... Tailights are dope though.
THESE ARE MINE..... I think they might look good on white too.

California vehicle code section 26101 says that no person may use on a vehicle any device which is intended to alter or modify the original design or performance of any safety glazing material (glass) or any required lighting device. Therefore, any tinting of the tail lamps is not permitted. Section 24252 does not apply to the tinting statute. If you were cited for 24252a, you should contest the citation on the grounds that the section does not apply to tinted tail lamps. (28 year CHP officer).

NICE RUDY!... Although I do agree that tinting your tailights dark as HECK, severly reduces the light output & will cause safety issues. I believe in modifying he vehicle in a way that enhances the vehicles handling over just looks.
KEEP ON KEEPIN OUR HIGHWAYS SAFE! LOL

I have absolutely nothing against modifying ones vehicle. In fact, I would encourage it. We just have to be mindful that some of the modifications might just catch the eye of the ever watchful CHP officer looking for some easy activity.
