Toyota boosts sticker prices on'06 models - - By Greg Migliore - - Source: Automotive News
DETROIT -- Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. raised the sticker prices on nine 2006 Toyota Division models. The price increases range from $150 to $385.
The 2006 4Runner SUV with a five-speed automatic transmission and V-6 engine starts at $28,200. A limited-edition, four-wheel-drive version with a V-8 engine is $38,950. The 4Runner's average increase was $150, the smallest in Toyota's announcement.

Sorry guys but they'll never go back to the 4Runners they had in the 80's and 90's. That was their glory days.... to these days I still think those trucks look good. Along with the 4Runner that came just before it.... this one is just meh.

According to sources at Toyota, the 4-cylinder version of the venerable 4Runner is being discontinued after just 1 model year. The main reason for the drop is the extremely low take rate, with the V-6 model accounting for well over 90 percent of 4Runner sales.
Why such low interest? The 2.7-liter I-4 doesn't offer much of a fuel economy advantage versus the larger 4.0-liter V-6 - especially when considering its 113-horsepower and 100 pound-foot disadvantage. In fact, EPA ratings for the 2 are just a single mpg apart from each other, registering at 20 mpg combined city/highway for the smaller engine and 19 mpg combined for the V-6 in the same SR5 2WD trim. And any way you slice it, 157 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque isn't a whole lot when you have nearly 4800 pounds of curb weight to move around.
No word on how many 4-cylinder 4Runners were sold, but we estimate the figure to be less than 1000. That would make this frugal 4Runner one of the rarest Toyotas of the last several decades.

During Toyota’s launch event for the new 4Runner Thursday ahead of the Chicago Auto Show, group vice president and general manager of theToyotaDivision at Toyota Motor North America Jack Hollis, said in passing “every 4Runner is fitted with a new instrument panel.” He completely glossed over the extremely important fact that this new instrument panel features a tachometer that only revs to 4500 rpm.
The current generation Toyota 4Runner, having been in production since 2009, features only one engine for worldwide consumption. The 1GR-FE V6 is that long-serving 4-liter that Toyota has made available in almost all of its trucks and SUVs since 2002. Unless Toyota has all of a sudden seen fit to reduce the 1GR’s redline from 6000 rpm to 4500 rpm, it would seem Toyota is finally planning a diesel option for the 4Runner.
Being that the rest of the world receives a Toyota Hilux pickup with an available 1GR V6 as well as a diesel option, it would make sense for Toyota to use this same diesel option under the hood of the 4Runner. The 1GD-FTV is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline four which makes 175 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.
It was a bit tricky of Toyota to sneak that image into its press conference, seen in the below video at timestamp 15:44, but a bit fun that it wasn’t quite ready to play that card just yet.

The rugged 4Runner body-on-frame SUV is entering its 10th year on sale in the United States, and Toyota has just released details about the updated 2020 model
The 4Runner has soldiered on with only minor changes since its facelift for the 2014 model year and the introduction of the TRD Pro trim level for 2015.
So what’s new for 2020, you ask? Well, Toyota has decided to make the Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) pack as standard on all grades, as well as add new tech, comfort and convenience upgrades. The safety suite of driver-assist technologies includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Sway Warning System, Automatic High Beams and High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC).
For 2020, all grades also sport a new instrument panel design along with a high-resolution 8-inch touchscreen display for the Audio, Audio Plus and Premium Audio systems. At the same time, the infotainment systems become smarter with the addition of Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. This will no doubt be appreciated by smartphone users, as will the addition of two USB ports for rear seat passengers.
In addition to all the upgrades listed above, the 4Runner TRD Pro, SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium grades gain standard Smart Key with Push Button Start for 2020. Upgrades for the TRD Pro also include a new TRD-branded cat-back exhaust for the 270 HP V6, updated HVAC controls borrowed from the Limited, as well as Army Green and Magnetic Gray Metallic exterior colors.
As for the range-topping 4Runner Limited grade, it will continue to be available with the Nightshade Special Edition that debuted IN 2019. Mechanically, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner continues with the same 4.0-liter V6 rated at 270 HP and 278 lb-ft (377 Nm) of torque, mated to a five-speed ECT automatic transmission and 4×2, part-time 4×4, or full-time 4×4.
Toyota hasn’t announced pricing details, but according to a report citing pricing documents the 2020 4Runner will see increases ranging from $735 to $2,100, depending on the trim level.
