SUV crazy in Europe
EDWARD LAPHAM COMMENTARY 7/16/04: SUV crazy in Europe, but just a little - - By Edward Lapham - - Source: Automotive News / July 16, 2004
A growing number of European consumers are developing a taste for SUVs, especially the Japanese brands that account for half of all sport-utility sales there.
More than 800,000 SUVs were sold on the continent last year, some 5 percent of total European light-vehicle sales.
But the days of runaway growth in demand for SUVs are nearly over, according to R.L. Polk Europe.
Polk estimates that SUV sales will peak at about 1.2 million units in 2008 as more European models go on sale. That would be another 50 percent gain in the next five years.
After that, Polk expects Europeans to migrate back to sedans and other more car-like vehicles because of concerns about emissions and fuel economy.
