Exclamation Q/A for 04TL OWNERS

There are way too many threads about the TL. So this one is for all those that have questions about the car for current TL owners. Or just questions before your purchase. Or even just comments about your 04TL.

I would like to ask anyone with a quartz interior to please post some photos of their car. We've seen some ebony interior shots that have been amazing, and I'd like to compare them to the quartz (its easier than going back and forth to the dealership)...

Justin, you can close the other thread I started and please reply to:

OK, for the few lucky guys that have driven both the TSX 6MT and the TL 6MT how does their handling compare? I just read Jeff's review over at TOV and it got me pretty excited about the 04 TL 6MT.

As for the 5AT, IMO per my previous review has stated the TSX wins in handling easy.

Guys and gals, please stay away from straight-line acceleration. Everybody knows the TL wins easy in that category.

Also I am not talking about tires either.

At this point, is there anything that you absolutely do not like about the car?

No, but the matt finish front grille and orangey camel interior will have to grow on me. Now I wish the Abyss blue came with a parchment interior, since it is so much nicer than the parchment in the TSX. Sunglass holders don't look that great either.

Question: I am, going to trade in my 02TL-S (Non- Navi), for a 2004 TL. How easy is it to use the new Navi? I sat in the car a saw a mouse on the Navi dashboard. My wife has never used a computer at all and this will e her car. Is it worth the $2K?

I've found one thing that I don't like (so far, at least). The space to hold CD's between the seats is not deep enough to hold DVD-A jewel cases. When I did get it to shut with a DVD-A in there, it scratched the underneath of the top. Oh well, a minor complaint, but you think they would have made it deep enough for DVD-A cases since they are hyping the DVD-A's.

Oh by the way, the sound system with DVD-A's is well worth any inconvenience of storing the cases elsewhere. I've never heard a sound system like this in a car (or many other places for that matter).

It has the same Navi as the TSX and Acccord. It is awesome!!!! Voice commands are the way to go. You rarely have to touch a button and the 8" screen is the biggest out there. There are many members of this board that have a navi. Look through some old posts on the TSX, since it is the same unit.

PS - with the TL and a Blue tooth phone you can even dial the phone numbers in the database.

PS2 - Just put your DVD-Audio in a regular jewel case. Not all DVD-Audios come in the big cases. I have LA Woman and Tiger Lily (among others) and both of those are in regular jewel cases.

The mouse is superfluous. I use it only if I'm moving the target on the navi. All other commands can be voiced or pushed on the screen. I'm a former non-navi guy and now swear by them. If you travel like I do, it's worth the $2k. Even if you don't travel, it simply looks better than the non-navi setup.

It looks like I will just have a wait a few more weeks (months) for the 6MT to do a true comparison.

Yeah. I was sorry to see your other thread get closed, because really this deserves to be highlighted.

I was all set to say over there, "Please include 5AT comparisons too!" but then I saw the thread was closed.

This thread we're on right now doesn't deal directly with comparing the TL to the TSX, nor to any other car, nor does it deal specifically with handling.

So, I'm putting in a LOUD vote for re-opening your other thread, or re-creating one like it.

for what it works, nav systems usually cost about $2k. however, they depreciate fast, and after 3 years only contribute about $600 to the cost of a used car.

That said, the new Acura nav is without doubt the best pre-installed nav on the market. The voice recognition, display size and user interface are top notch, and the speed is phenomenal. It typically takes other nav systems up to two minutes between when you start to enter destination data and when it finally shows you a map. The Acura nav will do all this in about 45 seconds, or less if your destination is one of the 8.7 million 'points of interest'. Also, the nav starts up in about 15 seconds, as opposed to up to a minute in other systems.

Why did they make the DVD-A jewel cases SLIGHTLY larger than the CD Cases? Doesn't make sense. Also, 04TLToBe, what DVD-A's have you found that you like? I was planning on buying 2 or 3, before I got my car. I have Rumors and tested it at the dealer for a short time. It sounded great. Anyone else found some DVD-A's that show off the sound system?

I have Tiger Lily, Hotel California, LA Woman, Night at the Opera, Document, and Brain Salad Surgery on DVD-Audio. I also have Globe Sessions and Police classics on DTS, which also plays in 5.1 in the 04 TL. Unfortunately the day I test drove the TL I didn't have any of these titles with me, but the sampler the dealer has is pretty good. The DVD-Audio songs sound super in the TL. Very similar to my high-end home system. I do have an issue with the bass distortion coming out of the sub. Maybe this will not be present in the cars coming later off the line.

Justin, a friend of mine that lives in New Jersey, (also a 2004 TL-S Owner), went to his local Acura Dealer and he swears that he saw a 2004 TL there that has Directional Indicators in the Outside Mirrors. Is that possible? Are they starting to put them in higher VIN # Cars? Thanks.

Its believable, this is what I thought from the beginning..

I mean Acura doesn't print Error Brochure and a Error Window Stick for nothing..

Maybe they didn't have enough of the indicators so they delayed it on early arrivals..

Thats why waiting will be well worth it!

I have a question for new TL owners....

Has anyone here tinted their windows? There is a thread on vtec.net in the TL discussion forum that claims there is an issue with the window seals and window tinting. Essentially the window tint scrapes off the windows when you lower and raise them. While this could be bogus info., it's something I am naturally concerned about.

Unfortunately, we will not see trun signal indicator on side view mirrors. Acura has already sent out corrected window stickers to those TL with specific VIN #.

I don't think they had any 6MT for R/D in any cities yet. I went to the one in Baltimore and we didn't have a 6MT to drive. I am so interested in driving one too! I owned a 03 CLS 6MT. It's already amazing! I can't imagine the TL 6 MT working with both VSA and drive-by-wire. It's going to be awesome! I may order one real soon!

And don't forget the LSD, better brakes, and stiffer suspension.
I am still about 80/20 that I will buy a TSX, but a great test drive in a 6MT TL may change my mind.

Couple qucik questions for owners:

1) when in reverse do side mirrors tilt down?
2) are side mirrors have a film on them to reduce glare?

Yes, I have them tinted, no problem, but I have not rolled them down much, only about a 1/2 dozen times, no scratches yet.

I just bought a non-navi '04 TL with VIN# in the 1500s and have a problem with the temperature display for the passenger. For example, the number 2 display as such:

====

====
|
|____

As you can see, there's a line missing on the number 2. Does anyone else have this problem. Is this an issue related to early production models? BTW, I never signed a paper saying that the directional signal in the mirrors was an error. I still have the original sticker.

Yeah, Justin also figured it was that.

And, as I've been saying since the ride-and-drives, we're gonna be having A LOT of that, not just because the two cars look alike but even more so, because their sizes are so very similar. People still have trouble absorbing this, because it's so different from what they had been assuming and because it goes against our basic images of "TSX" and "TL."

But you might just as well forget every prior mental image you had of the TL, because it doesn't work any more.
