I have to say I am surprised by this news. I was not expecting GM to be so agressive with the powertrain wih the GTO so quickly. Good for them. Once again, like with Cadillac, they show they're for real and all out. IT's war with every subsidiary. Now make it look even better with the 2006 version. Yes. Dont stop pounding.

The only other thought is: If the base GTO makes 400HP, what will The Judge make? It's got to be the engine from the next Z06... So 500HP?

I might be excited if the car didn't weigh so much, car will be lucky to touch the z28's performance. I am however glad they have decided not to sit still because the current car really isn't respectable as a gto with its current power/weight.

Are you saying that this 400HP GTO will be slower in acceleration then the Z28 was?

No HID
No NAV
No Memory Seats
No VSA
No heated Side Mirror.
No auto move and return for the seats ( I tried to get in the back seat and it was a pain )
No Sunroof ( no that important )
No enough space in the trunk ( no that important, I hae a sienna )

Too much money, let us see the next Mustang Cobra!

Interior is nice though!

I'm very impressed by these changes. The issues I had with the GTO was that it just really wasn't fast enough, but the new LS2 should change that hopefully.

No HID...that does suck
No Nav....eh, motorized 7" from dash..I'm sure most people would upgrade
No memory seats....are they at least electronic or are they manual? manual would suck
No VSA.....it doesnt have something of its own?
No heated Side Mirror....eh..not too important unless you live in snowvilles
No auto move.....eh, not that important..never have anyone sit behind me anyways
NO sunroof....that bites..I liked it

hmm.....its like give and take here....still cant wait to actually see one in person though..my thoughts might change after seeing that. (2005 model that is)

i'd hit that. my major cosmetic complaint from the 04 was the two pipes on one side, thats just awkward, now with quad pipes it looks hella mean. shidawg, i'd hit it all day. 400hp>sunroof>automove>heated side mirror

Wow. Nice find.

2 things:

1. I cant believe how much fatter the torque curve of the new engine is as compared to the Z06 engine.

2. I cant believe seeing that LS6 still making good power at 6500 rpm.

I thing you're reading it wrong. It says engine power, so Im guessing that means engine dyno (out of the car).

My first thought. I mean 400HP at the wheels for a RWD car is probably 475 at the crank. I just cant accept that much underrating from GM. 10-20 or even 30HP, but not more than that. It might have been an exception, I do not know. We'll see how fast the car is on the track and tell from there.

Then I realized it's at-the-crank HP

Another way of looking at this:

This thing makes 290 pounds of torque at 1000 rpm! I mean our car makes 232 as its max torque figure A new gen. 911 makes 275 or so.

The torque scale starts at 250 lb/ft so the chart is exagerated. Had it gone to 0 it would look much flatter.

Put it this way, from 2000 - 6000 RPM it is making at least 90% of its peak torque. That is flat anyway you cut it.

yea i was looking at the chart today and it did seem off. Regardless though so much power at such low RPM. Launching must be difficult.

went to the Pontiac dealership today to look at the 2004 GTO. I inquired about the new 2005 and how it would be different. He told me that the 2005 GTO will be exactly the same as the 2004. In late 2005 they will release a special edition GTO that will be roughly $2-3K more than the current GTO in price. The late release will be limited. This sucks!!! I was hoping that the 2005 would be the new one out right, not some limited edition one.

Anyone else hear differently or the same?

THat means that either the rep is wrong, or the info above is wrong. We'll know soon.

There is a third possibility. The rep knows this news and he is lying so that he sells the 04 model out before the 05s come in. I mean who would not postpone a near-term GTO purchase when knowing that the LS2 will be used in the 05 model. Forget about the rest of the enhancements.

FYI: The Chicago Tribune confirms "rumors" of more power and a refresh for the 05 GTO.

so based on this dyno a c6 would prolly beat a 405hp z06 in a 1/4 mile race??

For those having trouble visualizing how flat the LS2 torque curve is, here is a rough estimate of the data plugged into excel with the y-axis starting at zero:
