GM Unveils Design for New European Luxury Car
Monday September 8, 7:25 pm ET
By Neal E. Boudette, Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal
FRANKFURT -- General Motors Corp. on Monday unveiled a design for a new European luxury car, a sign it's gearing up to take a run at German premium car makers BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Developed by GM's Opel unit in Germany, the Insignia is a two-door, rear-wheel drive automobile featuring a 344-horsepower V-8 engine, wide rear fenders and a sloping roof that arcs seamlessly into the rear window and bumpers.
GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said the company is waiting to see the reaction to the car before deciding if it will turn the vehicle into a real product. "It is only a concept car. That's all it is right now," he said.
But in a presentation Monday night on the eve of the Frankfurt car show, other GM officials made it clear Opel is counting on getting back into the market for large, upscale cars.
"The only thing missing from the line-up this year is an Opel top-of-the-range model," Opel Managing Director Carl Peter Forster said. "This is a bit unusual for us. We have a long history of producing big, powerful models."
Michael Burns, president of GM Europe, also noted Opel has ended up producing just about all of the concept cars it has shown in the last several years.
The Insignia signals a return to rear-wheel drive technology for GM, which for years has used front-wheel drive systems in most of its passenger vehicles. Mr. Wagoner acknowledged that the underpinnings of the Insignia very likely will be used in future rear-wheel drive cars for the U.S. market.
Opel could offer the Insignia as a less expensive alternative to the BMW 5- Series and Mercedes E-Class, vehicles that sell for around 50,000 euros ($55, 377) and up, a price that's out of reach for most car buyers.

New Opel Insignia Leaked
From WCF...
Yesterday, Dutch car magazine AutoWeek has blown the Opel Insignia embargo out of the water but failed to supply eager car enthusiasts with official specs. The car mag posted seven images on their website stating that the official press release should follow later this week.
Embargo breaking seems to be a favorite pass-time for many print magazines and the new Opel Insignia, destined for a British International Motor Show debut this summer as the Vauxhall Insignia, is no exception. On the bright side, Opel may now be inclined to release the official specs and full image gallery earlier.
The Opel Insignia will compete in the highly competitive D segment together with the new Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6, Renault Laguna and VW Passat. The new Insignia is the successor of the Opel Vectra and was first seen as the GTC Concept at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.
As mentioned above, there are no official specs but we can hazard a guess at which engines may be available. Starting with 1.6 and 2.0 liter turbo and 250 hp 2.8 liter V6 petrol engines, a 1.9 liter diesel and 1.9 liter turbo diesel (power output ranging from 120 to 180 hp). A 2.9 liter V6 diesel is expected to follow later while an OPC version may end up with 300 hp.
Stay tuned for official information!

The D segment includes the Euro Accord.
Everytime I see some European version of some GM or Ford product it reminds me of the poor offerings (style wise) of the USDM models.

The old guard at Ford points to the 500 as a "failure" of euro design because it was based on the old Passat.
The car was a dud out of the box.
Stupidity all around.

Official Unveiling...
Taken from WCF...
Earlier this week Dutch car magazine AutoWeek spilled the beans by publishing seven images of the all new Opel Insignia on their website but failed to supply official information. Today Opel released the official documents and images!
Opel is turning a page with the new Insignia, signalling a new era with an all new car, new name and a (although slightly) redesigned emblem, coinciding with Vauxhall's new emblem. The sedan and hatchback will make their public debuts at this summer's British International Motor Show in London.
GM Europe’s International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany is responsible for the design which stands out in a few ways. First the coupe-like roof line on the notchback, the new head and rearlights with Opel's new 'wing' signature and the 'blade' side contour. The new design cues continue inside with a dashboard that wraps from the instrument panel to the door, a new feature which will be applied to Opel's future models.
The headlights come with Opel's new AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) system, a system which allows the lights to automatically adjust its lighting in nine different ways according to the circumstances. They also feature LED daytime running lights, these LED lights use far less energy than regular lights and cut CO2 emissions from 6g/km to nearly zero.
The Opel Insignia will be available with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The AWD is fitted with the FlexRide mechatronic chassis system with its Adaptive Stability Technology, but is also optional for the FWD models. Seven engines will be offered at first, 4 petrol engines ranging from a 4-cylinder 115 hp unit to a 260 hp V6 and three new 2.0 liter direct-injection diesels ranging from 110 to 160 hp. A less environmentally taxing EcoFLEX version will be on offer subsequently.
“As each feature demonstrates, the Insignia is the result of our quest to develop a car that combines striking design, excellent driving dynamics and innovative technology” says Hans H. Demant, Managing Director, Adam Opel GmbH.

Those Opel designers must have been drinking the CLS koolaid. This "4 door coupe" thing the CLS started seems to be spreading. This looks good but who said anything about this being the next Aura? Isn't the Aura only like 2 MY old - meaning it has 3 MYs left before replacement, by which time this Opel design will be on its MMC already?

Here's the Buick Invicta, didn't feel like starting a new thread since this probably another rebadge from the General. But I'm in love with it.
