Mazda Reports November 2008 Sales
- MAZDA5 Sales Lead The Way -
Last update: 2:03 p.m. EST Dec. 2, 2008
IRVINE, Calif., Dec 02, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported November 2008 sales of 14,134, down 31.3 percent versus last year (down 28.6 percent on a DSR basis), and year-to-date sales of 245,984, down 9.3 percent.
The MAZDA5 multi-activity vehicle had an incredible sales month with sales of 1,499 units; volume was up more than three times over November 2007. On a year-to-date basis, the MAZDA5 is up 36.8 percent.
"We initially thought the light at the end of the tunnel would be getting closer as we neared the end of the year, but every sale continues to be a struggle," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. "There's credit out there, and fuel prices have receded to levels we haven't seen in a year, but consumer confidence remains the problem. Down a little more than nine percent year-over-year may be nothing to crow about, but we feel we'll be well positioned for when the economy turns, thanks to the right cars, at the right price, sold through the right dealers."
The all-new 2009 MAZDA6, which arrived at dealerships across the country in September, continues its strong start. The new MAZDA6 features a larger body than the outgoing car, as well as more powerful -- and more fuel efficient -- engine choices.
Mazda Motor de Mexico (MMdM) celebrated its best-ever November with sales of 1,994 vehicles, up 36 percent versus last year. On a year-to-date basis, MMdM reported 19,293 total sales, accounting for a 33 percent increase versus last year. The all-new MAZDA6 also had a record month with 407 vehicles sold, up 450 percent versus last November. Mazda Canada Inc. (MCI) reported November sales of 5,024 units, up slightly compared to November 2007.

The sizzle in the Steak
Official Release: MINI USA reported November sales of 4,545 automobiles, up 43.1 percent from the 3,177 cars sold in November 2007. Year-to-date, the division reported sales of 50,511 automobiles, an increase of 31.3 percent, compared to the 38,483 cars reported in the first eleven months of 2007.
“We’ve seen some slowing in MINI showroom traffic just the same as everyone else in the last month,” said Jim McDowell, Vice-President of MINI USA. “However, we’re still positive about our future sales due to the fact the recent frenzy towards more efficient transportation has introduced more consumers to our brand. This has helped us hit the milestone of 50,000 sales in November, one month sooner than we expected.”

Chrysler, GM, Toyota, Hyundai report massive sales declines
Every major automaker today reported significant U.S. sales declines for the month of November. Worst hit - so far - was Chrysler, down a whopping 47 percent. But Nissan and General Motors weren’t far behind with massive 42 and 41 percent drops, respectively. You might be surprised to hear Hyundai is next on the list, declining 40 percent, and sister company Kia tumbled 37 percent. And even Toyota’s sales slumped by 34 percent.
Nissan division reported a 44.4 percent drop, while its Infiniti luxury subsidiary saw a 28 percent drop.
Honda reported an overall decline of 32 percent. Mazda sales were down roughly the same amount — 31.3 for the month of November. Ford fared slightly better than much of the competition, reporting a 31 percent decline in sales. Following closely was Daimler, reporting a 30 percent drop in Mercedes-Benz and Smart sales. BMW sales were down 27 percent.
Subaru seems to be fairing the best so far - the Japanese automaker’s sales were down just 8 percent and its Forester compact SUV had its best November ever.
Mitsubishi sales were down 36 percent to 5,096 units, though the Outlander had its best month in six months.
But sometimes it’s important to dig a little deeper into these numbers. For example, BMW brand sales were off a whopping 36.1 percent. Sales of Mini models shot up an amazing 43.1 percent, which helped to improve BMW’s overall figures. Similarly, Mercedes brand sales were actually down 38 percent, offset somewhat by sales of Smart models, which began in the United States in January 2008.
Over at the Chrysler camp, sales figures are a mixed bag of bad and worse. Chrysler brand sales collapsed 57 percent, while Dodge was down 44 percent and Jeep 42 percent. Chrysler 300 and Sebring sales fell by 70 percent and 67 percent, respectively. Aspen and Challenger sales were the only good news.
Ford was a little more balanced, with the namesake brand declining 30 percent, and Mercury falling a predictable 41.4 percent. Surprisingly, Lincoln sales were down just 8.3 percent, which is definitely a good sign for the luxury brand, which introduced the new MKS sedan this year. Ford’s Volvo subsidiary was the firm’s biggest loser, reporting a 46.5 percent decline.
The Toyota and Lexus divisions had comparable declines of 33.8 and 34.7 percent, respectively. Scion sales slumped the most — down 45 percent. Rival Honda was slightly more polarized, with the luxury Acura division posting a 39 percent decline, compared with a 30.6 percent drop for the Honda brand.

So he walked and he'll likely get an Accord Sedan which I found to be almost as nice as the TSX. I really don't know that I could justify an extra $5-7000 for the TSX over the 4-banger Accord.

Meanwhile BMW and Infiniti were only slightly down and all the other luxury makes were either up or about the same. Lexus up 19%.
Then we see Nissan, Mazda and Toyota all slightly up.
I get the feeling this market is starting to lose interest in Honda/Acura and this is proving it. The Civic has now lost its monthly sales crown to the Corolla 4 months in a row and is on the verge of losing its yearly sales crown for the first time in 8 Years! Honda failing to adjust prices has hurt them IMO.

I don't know about other regions, but last time I went to Richmond Acura for service, which wasn't long ago, I only saw a handful of 09 TL's. As for the TSX, they don't have any attractive lease and/or finance programs, unlike other makes.
#21
^^^ yep it seems like its all about incentives right now and Acura/Honda don't have them like the other makes.
GM/Chrysler cars especially have ridiculous markdowns in my area and I'm figuring those are being sold at a loss. We'll see when the quarter reports are out who actually made money selling cars.

Incentives by other makers do not explain away the big drop.
Odd/ Love it or hate it styling however will come back to hurt the bottom line.
I think that is where Acura is headed....until it bails out of the horrible beak design, acknowledges the design failures, and turns over a new leaf.

I'm definitely not discounting Acura's lackluster lineup in the 60% drop, but Acura has always been the value luxury brand that's good at everything but generally not great at anything in particular.
A car buyer can usually find one aspect that they really like that's better in some other car than an Acura. And the decision to buy Acura is usually a compromise centered on overall value.
So these incentives from the other manufacturers en masse are hitting Acura right square in the value conscious nuts.

If I was in the market now, I'd probably pick the Lexus ES with the new Canadian price reductions and the 3.9% rate for 48 months.

In the US, the Acura TL used to always outsell the Lexus ES; but now no more, thanks to the new TL front end styling.

What Would Don Draper Do?
i think there may some truth to that, but i'm not surprised that the new ES is selling so well. it looks good (i know, subjective), it's a lexus (people love lexus), and it's an affordable lexus (even better).
#29
It's not just the TL's new looks, the ES sells on its own merits (which ones, I'm not sure...I don't particularly like the thing)

I think it's a combination of reasons:
1.) the front grille
2.) lack of cars
3.) lack of incentive programs
4.) People less willing to buy
5.) Major price cut of Lexus
Lexus Canada didn't have major price cut until early this year (that's what my friend who bought a IS250 last year told me, he bought it in Oct 2007, before the price cut, then later Lexus readjusted the price). I think other brands were doing the same too, but not Acura. The TSX didn't really get a price cut, Acura simply gave a model with less features, and thus a lower price tag. The TL on the other hand did get a slight price cut, but it's not a big one compared to Lexus (IS250 went from $36k to $31k). Also there are not that many 09 TL's to choose from at the dealers, at least that's true with Richmond Acura.
On the other hand, wow, what's up with Nissan..a drop of over 40% in the states.

Don't U Want Me
I love me some Jody Watley. Did u see the episode of VH1's "I Love the 80s" where Debbie Gibson pulled her face back real tight to stretch her eyes in an effort to show how exotic Watley looked?
Anyhoo, the TL outsold the ES up until around the time the ES350 debuted & the TL was 3 years old. Still not a fan of the ES350 interior & the fact that it suffers from Toyota/Lexus's post 2005 cost-cutting that lead to problems in their newer models.

I recently tried to get my in-laws and brother in law into new Honda's but there were far better deals to be found elsewhere. Only reason I bought an Ody was the 3K cashback.
