@ this Edmunds quote:

Chevrolet saves a vast amount of money in building the new Malibu by installing old Mitsubishi Diamante rear ends.

Hertz has always had mid-line (LT trim), V6 models in their rental fleet, so I think one should be able to sample the new 3.6L V6/6-speed Auto combo if they rent from Hertz. Enterprise on the other hand, always stocks their fleet with the basement trim LS models.

Great, more GM models oversold to fleets and holding about 33% of their MSRP after 3 years!

GM is actually cutting fleet sales dramatically to help bring margins and resale values up.

God I hope so. I was considering a GTO (I realize it's not a fleet car) for about a half a second and then smacked myself and was reminded of a $20k Grand Prix that was worth $7500 with average mileage and vg condition 26 months later.

Actually, GTO's have been holding fairly well actually.......that 400hp LS2 rear drive is much different from a FWD GP and people know that fortunately.

Folks have been picking up 06s for $27-$29k on average, that's mucho car for the $.

Looks like electroluminescent gauges

Layout is very similar to the Accord's, although Honda managed to squeeze that little storage cubby at the bottom of the vertical stack. I don't think that little rectangular outline in the Malibu actually pops open.

Really? I'm just really gunshy I guess. Though I'd love a LS2 GTO I like that it's a sleeper ... Less hassle from The Man.

Not sure about that rear end. But another good effort form the general. This along with the Lambda platforms look very promising.

This is a big improvement for GM....much better than the previous gen.
A very good product.....but how does it compare to it's asian competition....?

My thoughts are it's not quite there....the interior is vastly improved, and is almost on par with its competitors...if not already on par....The exterior is nice, but here is where the design is lacking....the rear is just bad, and the rest of the design is good, and tasteful, but not class leading or pushing the edges like Camry.

Keep it up GM, and you will have a true winner in a couple of generations down the road.

From the sound of things its an Aura clone. And according to the mags the Aura is still not up to the level of Asian competition. Although the interior in the Malibu looks alot better than the Aura's IMO.

Maybe picking one up at a greedy dealer for that much as a brand new left over from 06. Car is an idea brought together with old parts, might as well get a used vette vs a new gto.

Sorry, but the grill is mighty ugly.... and the side profile looks just like the TL. Then the rear looks like G35. It's not absolutely terrible but it is just like a bit of different cars being thrown together... very derivative... and I wish that Chevrolet would get rid of that ugly gold emblem.

I have to see it in person. I can see after a 2nd look how it isn't such a hot design front and rear.

One has to admit, the front looks srorty/upscale, both at the same time. Plus, it looks like nothing else in the market. They did a good job. The only thing I dont like about the exterior is the design of the rear lights.

the rear bumper and valence looks good its just the tail lights and how flat/verticle the trunk is that ruins it

I can live with the rear lights though. Overall, this car should do well.

Absolutely. GM has finally, finally, come with a true mainstream, bread and butter family sedan that could possibly give the lead competition a run for it's money.

Yup, the rear is the weakest point. The rest of the design is so good they really could've done much better.

I really like the small details Chevy did to the car... they really took there time. I love the Chevy logo on the headlamp projector.

Also, the molded lips above the tailpipes in the rear lower fascia... these are the things GM's designers would have overlooked in the past.

Here's the first real world pic of the two tone interior that I've seen. Personally, I really like it. I'm loving the guages; that shit is hot.

They took their time looking at one of the best when it comes to details: VW.

Check out the VW logo in the Jetta's headlight:

Looks good. The rear is a little off to me, but overall it's a lot better than most things Chevy has put out in the past 10 years..

"UAW Local: GM To Delay Production Of Revamped Midsize Sedan"

DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) has informed the United Auto Workers union that the auto maker delayed production plans for a Chevrolet Malibu slated to be built in Fairfax, Kansas, in the near future. It is the second product program GM has told the UAW it is delaying in recent days.

In an informational flyer distributed to UAW employees in Lordstown, Ohio, and posted on UAW Local 1112's Web site, union officials told workers they had been given "news from the corporation that they have suspended two new vehicle programs for North America." Local 1112 is one of two union locals representing more than 4,000 workers in Lordstown, where GM builds smaller cars, including the Chevrolet Cobalt.

On Tuesday, Dow Jones Newswires reported GM had told the UAW that it is halting development of its so-called Delta vehicle program. Lordstown builds Delta-based cars and officials there have been negotiating a new labor agreement that would allow GM to cut labor costs at the plant in return for being awarded the next round of Delta cars, slated for production in 2009.

The flyer posted on the Local 1112 site mentions the Delta program suspension, and said that GM has "also delayed the Epsilon program which was under construction at the Fairfax, Kansas, assembly plant where they currently build the Chevy Malibu."

A GM spokesman and a spokesman for the UAW couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

While the threat to delay the Delta small car is seen as potential political posturing by GM in an effort to win UAW cooperation, delaying Epsilon production plans could hurt GM in the near term, as it aims to revive its position in the U.S. market. The Malibu, which is slated to be launched as a redesigned vehicle in the near future, is aimed at better competing with Toyota Motor Corp.'s (TM) Camry sedan.

Meantime, a UAW official at the Lordstown facility said talks on the agreement - dubbed a Competitive Operating Agreement - have been cut off by high-level UAW officials in Detroit. The UAW and GM had been negotiating cost cuts, such as the outsourcing of several jobs, up until Wednesday, this official said.

Yeah, the tail lights are very much VW-like too. I think they tried to follow VW as close as possible with this design.
