Mercedes-Benz: R-Class news

More info and a spy video from Autoexpress:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/video_g...o.php?id=37558

The new Mercedes GST is currently undergoing high-speed testing on the unlimited German Autobahn and the challenging Nürburgring. Being scared of spy-photographers, the German engineers do hardly ever drive on public roads during daytime. However, during one of the few times the testers left their secured proving ground, our team of spies shot the prototype of the future soft-roader, production cars of which will again be built in Tuscaloosa / Alabama (USA), together with the new GST which is a derivative of the next M-class.

Both new vehicles are due in the U.S. in 2004 and will hit European and Asian shores in 2005. The additional GST-class brings production capacity from today's 80.000 units per year to 200.000. While the new M-class will remain the luxury 4x4 off-roader with perfect on-road capabilities, the so-called Grand Sport Tourer will be a super-luxury and huge Off-Roader / MPV crossover.

The new M-class and GST will both have unibody construction and no ladder frame. Computer-controlled air-suspension will be standard for the GST while it will be an option for the new M-class. The new SL's sophisticated brake-by-wire system, though, will be on board of both cars. While the new M-class will be a five-seater, the GST will feature three rows of seats

GDI V6-engines with 3.0 or 3.6 litres (231 / 258 HP) as well as Common-Rail diesel V6s with 2.6 or 3.0 litres (190 / 218 HP) will be available from the start. A 5-litre V8 with 300 HP will be offered for both cars later, as well as a 5.5-litre V8 with 350 HP for the AMG-version @Automedia

2005 benz R-class??

qouted from edmunds.com

"There's no hotter market than luxury crossovers right now and this new model from Mercedes stands to capitalize on the trend."........................................... .................................................. .........."After showing a gleaming concept called the "Vision GST" at the 2002 North American International Auto Show, Mercedes later announced that it would in fact build a production version of the vehicle to augment its already popular M-Class SUV. Recent rumors suggest that it will be sold under the R-Class moniker, but no official name has been announced as of yet. Product details are slim, but the R-Class is expected to share a unibody platform with the redesigned M-Class as well as an air suspension, all-wheel drive and a range of six- and eight-cylinder engines. The R-Class starts production at Mercedes' Tuscaloosa, Ala., assembly plant at the end of 2004."

Looking at the front lights' design....is it me, or is Mercedes borrowing design clues from Porsche? And it's clues, I personally, do not like at all. I hate the front Porsche lights.

DaimlerChrysler factory in Alabama prepares for production of the new Grand Sports Tourer
Posted by: kak on Thursday, September 25, 2003 - 08:48 PM CET

Ten years after the location was decided on, the DaimlerChrysler site in Tuscaloosa (in the US state of Alabama) is going to be greatly extended and prepared for production of the new Grand Sports Tourer (GST). The future Mercedes model combines the features of existing vehicle concepts like the Saloon, the Estate and the “Sports Utility Vehicle” (SUV) into a new individual profile. The Grand Sports Tourer, which will go into production at the start of 2005, will, alongside the successful M-Class, be the second model which Mercedes-Benz produces in Tuscaloosa.

The designation Grand Sports Tourer describes the key characteristics of the future Mercedes model: “Grand” stands for size, roominess and functionality; “Sports” for dynamism and performance, and “Tourer” indicates that the qualities of this car are those of a comfortable vehicle for long-distance travel.

“This versatile automobile is the result of an intensive dialogue with our clients, whom we have been nurturing for years, in order to identify the wishes of our drivers, analyse them and turn them into new vehicle concepts”, said Professor Jürgen Hubbert, a member of the DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management and head of the Mercedes Car Group. “The leading technology and exciting design so typical of Mercedes will now also be making their mark in this new vehicle category.”

Exemplary roominess for up to six passengers

The Grand Sports Tourer is being designed as a long-distance car. This is why the engineers are being generous in their planning right from the start, ensuring plenty of room on all seats. In this innovative motor car, up to six people will be able to make themselves comfortable on individual seats which offer all the extras you can think of to adjust them to their individual needs. Thanks to exemplary interior variability, the future Mercedes model also caters for the desires of sports enthusiasts who wish to take bicycles, skis or other equipment with them on their journey.

Under the bonnet of the Grand Sports Tourer quiet six or eight cylinder engines and the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission will provide powerful acceleration.

An appealing synthesis of Intelligent engineering and aesthetic styling design

Offering high-tech systems such as electronically-controlled 4-wheel drive, the AIRMATIC DC pneumatic suspension and a whole range of other innovations, the GST is to feature highly intelligent engineering which will be able to actively contribute towards preventing accidents. In the words of Professor Jürgen Hubbert: “We have also set ourselves the goal of developing a vehicle which is not only technically perfect, but which also enthrals from an emotional point of view. For example through aesthetic styling design, high-quality materials, a highly up-to-date choice of colours and innovative details. The Grand Sports Tourer will be a trendsetter and in doing so will offer, in a nutshell, top levels of technical and emotional intelligence”.

Mercedes Readies GST II for Detroit

Mercedes-Benz USA officials said Thursday that it will unveil a second-generation concept of its Vision Grand Sport Tourer at the North American International Auto Show next month in Detroit.

The first-generation concept was shown in 2002 and Mercedes said soon thereafter that it planned to start building a vehicle similar to it by the fall of 2004 based on a newly-developed platform. The next GST concept is similar to the 2002 version and is close to what will be seen in Mercedes' forthcoming new subdivision of vehicles, rumored to be called R-Class, slated to launch in the beginning of 2005, instead of the initially-projected 2004. The GST will be the first vehicle to populate the R-Class and the first car to be built alongside M-Class sport-utility vehicles at Mercedes' Tuscaloosa, Ala., assembly plant.

"We believe that the concept offers enormous potential for the launch of a new Mercedes model family", says Jürgen Hubbert, head of the Mercedes Car Group, based in Stuttgart, Germany. The Alabama plant is undergoing $600 million worth of expansion work in order to build the vehicle and potential derivatives. If the concept is any indication of where Mercedes is headed with the R-Class, the company's new vehicle segment will look drastically different from what is available in the U.S. market today from a powertrain standpoint.

The concept is driven by a diesel-electric hybrid engine that is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. The new diesel-electric hybrid mill, according to Mercedes-Benz spokesman Rob Moran, is a combination of the company's diesel 4.0-liter V-8, available with S-Class models sold in Europe, and a 50-kilowatt electric motor installed to assist propulsion. The combination allows the powertrain to turn out 313 hp and 621 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes claims its diesel-electric hybrid engine will consume about 20 percent less fuel under standard driving than a conventional diesel, and if the engine is included in production plans it would be the only full-fledged hybrid in the United States with eight cylinders and diesel technology. The seven-speed is already fitted on E, S, CL, and SL models. The GST has a steering wheel-mounted shifter, and allows drivers to shift manually via paddle-like buttons on the wheel. Mercedes claims that the transmission improves fuel efficiency and off-the-line acceleration.

The original GST concept carried a 5.5-liter V-8 mated to a five-speed auto-manual.

While powertrain and drivetrain are forward looking, the 2004 GST is toned down slightly from the 2002 concept, which had no B-pillar, featured suicide-style doors and 22-inch wheels. The new concept has conventional doors thanks to the installation of a B-pillar, and 21-inch wheels, but carries over other innovations from 2002, such as a massive sliding panoramic roof and television monitors installed in the backs of first and second row headrests. It has three rows of bucket-style seats rather than at least one row of bench seating, like minivans and sport-utes conventionally do. If the past is any indication of how Mercedes will try to sell this concept to the public, much will be said about how this vehicle strays from convention to define a new segment, much like what has been said about Chrysler Group's Pacifica, which, when casually observed, looks strikingly similar to the GST.

In fact, Hubbert's vision for the GST to be "a touring car, station wagon, large-capacity vehicle and sport-utility vehicle rolled into one," sounds very similar to Chrysler vice president of design Trevor Creed's vision for the Pacifica sports tourer, which is "a vehicle that didn't conform to the traditional proportions of a car, sport-utility vehicle or minivan, yet featured their best attributes."

As was the case with the 2002 GST, expect Mercedes officials to spend a lot of energy at the Detroit show discrediting the suggestion that the Pacifica and GST share anything more than a few minor components. -John D. Stoll

R-Classy: Mercedes-Benz envisions a sport wagon

By AUTOWEEK

Mercedes-Benz is breaking out of its luxury car mold with the Grand Sport Tourer (GST)-or as the opulently-appointed sport wagon will be called when it goes on sale in 2005, the R-Class.

At its world debut at the Detroit auto show, the car will be billed as the Vision GST-Mercedes' way of saying it is very close to the coming production car. Mercedes says the car, positioned between the E- and S-Class, answers demands for greater versatility and practicality in the luxury car class.

The basic shape and overall proportions remain true to the GST concept car wheeled out in 2002, but other modifications are extensive, including the adoption of conventional front-hinged rear doors in place of the rear-hinged arrangement of the '02 concept. The interior also is less flamboyant and sports a full array of safety features.

Mercedes is planning two wheelbases for the GST, with the longer one aimed at the U.S. market that demands three rows of seating and space for six or seven passengers.

The Vision GST is powered by a hybrid drive system combining Mercedes-Benz's 4.0-liter V8 common-rail turbodiesel with an electric motor. Together they deliver 313 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque, though on part throttle the electric motor runs exclusively to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent over diesel engine propulsion.

R-Class will be built at Mercedes' plant in Alabama alongside the second-generation M-Class, with which it will share its engines, seven-speed automatic gearbox, permanent four-wheel drive and air suspension.

While the hybrid is under consideration for eventual sale in the U.S., production versions will first come with a range of V6 and V8 engines-from a base 3.5-liter V6 all the way up to a 6.3-liter V8 in a range-topping RL63 AMG model that's rumored to pack 500 hp. R-Class hits the U.S. market in 2005 as a 2006 model, at prices starting around $50,000. -GREG KABLE and MAC MORRISON

R-Class Is Caught On The Net - - Source: Autoexpress

Here's news on another eagerly awaited Mercedes - and we found it on the Internet. These grainy pictures are of the R-Class, and were taken from a teaser video clip that reveals the official car for the first time.

The footage is designed to spark interest among potential buyers of the ultra-luxurious people carrier, and features the interior as well as the exterior. The newcomer is still officially known as the Vision GST concept, and is due to be launched as the R-Class next year.

That thing is much bigger than the Pacifica... like the next size up. I like the exterior, but the interior is a very, very nice suprise. It's a bit avant garde.

Love the interior.....but that is a mini-van.

With the 65 in it though I would definitely let it be my grocery-getter.

2006 Mercedes-Benz R-Class - - Source: Autoweek

After two years of hype and three flamboyant concepts, Mercedes-Benz finally lifted the veil on the production version of its new all-wheel-drive, six-seat R-Class at the New York show. The plush but practical crossover, a combination of wagon, sport/ute and minivan, will go on sale in the States this fall with two engine offerings, a 3.5-liter, 268-hp, 258-lb-ft V6 in the R350, and a 5.0-liter, 302-hp, 339-lb-ft V8 in the R500. Mercedes isn't talking yet, but plans include an R55 AMG running a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 making about 500 hp.

Overall it's not bad. I just don't understand why they chose to give it a sedan window line, thus cutting off some added visibility at the D pillar?
