Except... Mercedes uses no rhyme or reason in their naming sequences. SL is a convertible but the ML isn't. The C class is the cheapest but the CL is the most expensive.

Unless MB is thinking of changing the G's name to GL, I do not think this is the GL car they registered the name for.

i dont think we'll see a rag top g here either, not really any market for it.

the way MB names the classes is based on german words to describe the kind of car theyre going for. im gonna look around to see if i can find the full names of some of these.

Next Gen. Mercedes G-Class News **New Spy Pics (page 2)**

Spy Shots: ’07 Mercedes-Benz G-Class - - Mercedes’ most rugged off-roader renews itself in 2006 - - by Hans Lehmann/Hidden Image - - SOurce: The Car Connection

Daimler-Chrysler’s biggest off-roader, the Mercedes G-Class, will get a replacement in the 2007 model year in North America.

The current G has been on the market an incredible 25 years. Again and again it was updated by adding electronic luxury like power windows, power steering, air-conditioning, and even airbags. Inside, the plain ute was updated with polished wood panelling and leather seats. The most expensive is the current AMG version, which sells surprisingly well these days, in particular in the United States.

Now, however, Daimler-Chrysler has finally planned to end the current G’s career. A replacement will be released in 2006.

Like the new Mercedes ML and R-Class, which were shown at the Detroit auto show last week, the next G-Class will be produced in the United States at the Alabama DaimlerChrysler plant.

Power will come from two diesels: a 231-hp V-6 and a 300-hp V-8. Two new V-8 gas engines — a 326-hp 4.6-liter and a 408-hp, 5.5-liter — will be available. The AMG version is rumored to deliver 460 hp.

In order not to disappoint fans of the rugged 4x4, Daimler Chrysler has developed a special top-of-the-line off-road package for the new G.

I would not be surprised if the name of this vehicle is changed to GL-Class due to this info

Combining the two below pieces of info:

Power will come from two diesels: a 231-hp V-6 and a 300-hp V-8. Two new V-8 gas engines — a 326-hp 4.6-liter and a 408-hp, 5.5-liter — will be available. The AMG version is rumored to deliver 460 hp.
and

The following names have been registered by DaimlerChrysler AG:

GL-CLASS, GL 400 = USA, Canada and Germany

GL 63 = Germany, EU, Canada and USA

GL 320, GL 350, GL 550, GL 55 = Germany, USA and Canada

GL, GL 280, GL 450, GL 500 = Germany, EU, USA and Canada
one could derive:

The 4.6 liter V8 could be called the GL450 and the 5.5 liter V8 the GL550. Possibly.

Finally, from the above info about the new engines, we can safely derive that these will be used in the rest of the Mercedes offerings in the USA, possibly uptuned or detuned. So expect these engine for the C, E, CLS, S, ML and possibly other Class cars.

Which also means that Audi is now really behind as far as V8s, especially considering that BMW upped the 4.4 liter V8 recently and calls their cars with the x50 denotation.

Bad move Mercedes, the boxy look of the original, while perhaps ugly, made it very unique.

I too was thinking about that. Hopefully the rendering is too "round" as compared to the real car.

Current box design is so dated looking, probably sell a ton more with something more in line with the rest of their suv lineup.

That's quite a departure from the previous-gen G-class. I wonder why they didn't just pick another letter.
